42a Lance-corporals, once. (9) S?E?S?D?S. This has been kicked about quite a bit already, but it would be nice to hear the views of others.

Chambers has Speisades
Question Author

Thanks, K. You've just driven one more nail into my coffin, and I think I'll have to give up on Spessades. Damn!
Yes, when you said it had been kicked about a bit I wasn't sure if citing Chambers would muddy matters!
There is also an entry under 'Lance-Prisado' which talks of Speisade.

Cheers K
My elderly but much used Newnes Family Dictionary (inherited from grandmother-in-law) has "speisade" for lance-corporal (obsolete)

Thanks, JRB. Spessade came from a Google source. None of my ancient reference books give either word. So I was hard to convince.

But now I have, most reluctantly, rewritten the whole grid - for the sake of one (disputed) letter. Just how stupid can one get!
