I have an S reg 1.3 petrol fiesta which has recently started to stutter/chug intermittedly when accelerating. Any idea why this might be? It has been serviced and they didn't comment on any problem. Could it be a petrol filter needs cleaning - is this easy to do?

I have a 1.6S with the CVH engine, it has been laid up for about 18 months and the engine tries to die when the accelerato is pressed but it then revs freely. there is a thing oin the carb which senses that the acceperator has been pressed by a change in the inlet manifold vacuum, and its supposed to make the mixture richer for a short period (only very short, a second or so).
I think my problem is due to hardening of the vacuum hoses, as I have cleaned up the mecahnical bits on the carb.
I think most carbs have some kind of way that prevents the mixture being too weak the instant you press the accelerator.
there are many other possibilities, sorry I canot help more.
Hi. Could be a misfire. Probably worth checking the HT leads and the spark plugs. Does it stutter all the time or only at certain revs? Make sure all the leads are connected properly. Did the garage change the plugs and leads? Could be a fuel delivery problem but this would be harder to check. Try the smple things first. Might also be worth checking air filter and breather hoses as well. Is it rough at idle??

Waggers - the car seems fine at idle, the stuttering seems quite random but usually occurs during acceleration (generally at mid/low revs). Garage have replaced spark plugs, not sure about leads but they didn't comment that they looked worn or anything.
if the car is stuttering when you pull away it sounds as though the clutch pressure plate is either warped or scored. think you have a clutch judder.
