I know that 'mutton Jeff' means deaf in cockney rhyming slang, but does anyone know where it originates from and what it has to do with deafness ?

Thanks in advance.

Isn't it mutt and jeff? That's what my little book says at any rate.

It is Mutt and Jeff.

It has nothing to do with deafness, it's rymming slang it is not supposed to have anything to do with the what it is used to represent. I mean what has North and South got to do with Mouth? What's trouble and strife got to do with........hang on!

I agree with Spacechimp. But then I would, wouldn't I?
