Pleased with my new laptop, but having trouble as in OP. I go to 'add account', enter email address, all OK, I get sent a confirmation number to my mobile phone, enter it & it is accepted, but then every time I get a message: "Something went wrong, we couldn't find your settings.
ERROR CODE 0x8007O490"

Windows 10 Mail and Calendar is a horrid app! Thunderbird, or simple webmail, is better but, if you want to continue using it, try resetting it:

Go to Start.

Scroll down the list of Programs to Mail.

Right-click on it.

Select More > App Settings.

Scroll down to, and click on, Reset.

If that doesn't work, try deleting the account, closing the Mail app, reopening it and recreating the account.

Chris also getting a notice on desktop, 'can't sign in to one drive' do I need onedrive?
Microsoft would like you to back up all your data in the cloud, using OneDrive. Their idea is to give you 5GB of storage for free and then, when you've used it all up, to start paying them money to increase the available storage capacity.

Some people love OneDrive. Others simply don't have any time (or need) for it. I fall into the latter camp. If you're the same, you can either unlink or uninstall OneDrive. Your laptop should then cease trying to sign into OneDrive, thus getting rid of the message that you've been seeing:

Chris: On the start menu I clicked on onedrive & there was an uninstall option which I clicked & it seems to have scarpered.

On my PC I have 3 email addresses, 2 Googlemail & this one, which is German Telekom (& most used), I have been trying to connect one of the Gmail accounts to the laptop.
Are you suggesting I have a completely different & one with a new address for the laptop?
No. I'm simply suggesting that if you appear to set up an account but it's not working, that you should delete it and then create it again. (To remove the account, right-click on it's name in the left-hand panel. Select Account Settings and then choose Delete Account. Once you've done that, close the Mail app, open it again and create the account from new).

Sorry to be dim Chris, but are you suggesting I delete that account from my PC?
Google have recently changed how other programmes access the serves - so you may have to login to the webmail first to give Mail access.

This change has rendered my IP cameras unable to send me email notifications.
>>> but are you suggesting I delete that account from my PC

I'm suggesting removing it from the Windows Mail app, and then putting it back again, as above.

However it might also be worth checking that IMAP access is actually enabled on your Gmail account:
Log into it via your web browser.
Click the 'Settings' cogwheel and choose 'See all settings'.
Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
In the "IMAP access" section, check that Enable IMAP is in the 'On' position.
(If it's not, enable it and click Save Changes)

//Click the 'Settings' cogwheel and choose 'See all settings'.
Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.//

In the settings list there is no 'Forwarding and POP/IMAP' tab.
After clicking the cogwheel, 'See All Settings' appears in blue. Click on it.

On the next screen, below the word 'Settings, there's a row of tabs (General / Labels / Inbox / etc). 'Forwarding and POP/IMAP' is the 5th tab in the row.
Question Author
All I get from the cog is 'settings' in a little white box which brings up a list down the right of screen which doesn't have the Forwarding & Pop Imap option anywhere :0(
At the top of that box on the RH side should be a 'See all settings' option.
I would check you privacy settings for the error code given as well (see post above)
Question Author
chelle; Thanks, but at the top of the 'Settings' list is 'Manage accounts' & a further 15 items non of which are 'see all items'
That doesn't sound right, just checking we are talking about your gmail account settings in the browser?
Question Author
I'm in my gmail inbox
What menu do you get if you select 'Manage accounts'?
-- answer removed --
Question Author
chelle; I get the names of the two gmail accounts, 'link boxes' and ' add account'
Khandro, as is his wont, has missed/ignored Buenchico's instruction to "Log into it via your web browser" and is looking at things in Windows Mail - his description matches steps 3 and 4 shown here:
