Time to get a ruddy grip. Starting with this:

//Energy bills to hit £3,000 in October, warns Scottish Power boss who fears 10M homes will be unable to afford heating this winter - as fire chief says spate of blazes is due to people burning wood to save money//

I think the lefties have gone off party gate now YMB, can't think why!
My regularly updated bill from Scottish Gas suggests that the £3000 figure may be well wide of the mark and an invention by journalists instructed to panic their flock or possibly a device to make the power companies look like Robin Hood when the bills land and aren't as predicted.

It's a touch higher than last year so far but I'm not exactly reaching for the whisky and revolver.
All these Energy suppliers etc etc ,are reporting massive profits, and yet the price to the Consumer goes through the roof .... But that is how Conservatism works ,,thats what you voted for, and now the cons are reaping the profits.
YMB - As I have pointed out before, and will do again, comparing one event as being less serious than another does not lessen the seriousness of the first event.

Yes energy bills are serious, but so is the possibility that our leaders and our Opposition are lying to us, and you cannot play down one by playing up the other, it's poor debating and it does not stand up to scrutiny.

Yes, I wonder TTT!

My bill was over 3K before the rise. HAs gone up quite a bit now as I was on a good tariff and I think its people coming off such tariffs that will struggle Douglas.

I do see where you are coming from AH.

But try telling that to someone on the bones of their ass.
odd how renewable energy is suddenly not so renewable time for free solar panels i think
for note so that the old dears dont worry my energy bill went up by ten pounds compared to between feb and march and i do understand its not as cold this month to last but we make do
Question Author
£10:00? I'm not trying to be rude but do you just live in a Studio or in Spain or something?

Or maybe you are not on the gas and leccy?
YMB - // I do see where you are coming from AH.

As opposed to telling them that 'Partygate' is less important?

Why would they care?

If the man next door has a broken leg, and I have an impacted wisdom tooth, thinking that he is probably suffering more than me does not help my pain one iota, so why would anyone wind me up by telling me he is 'worse off'?

Like I care!!!!!
How does it work when some energy companies are reporting huge profits in the last year yet there are customers in low income households struggling to feed their families? Why not help customers by reducing bills.
tigger - // Why not help customers by reducing bills. //

Because they are a business, not a charity.

One makes money and keeps it, the other gives money away.
Fair enough but why not keep them at pre-April prices?

I cant believe you wrote that. One is annoyance the other is directly affecting peoples lives and pockets, of course they care more about the item affecting them directly. You may trouser a good salary, as I do, and dont care about the increase but I have some compassion for those struggling.

Because they are a business, not a charity.

When you are a major conglomerate, you focus entirely on your profits because that is what pleases your share holders and encourages them to invest more money, so you can make more money for them.

The entire upper strata of energy company management is bonus driven - the bigger the profits, the bigger bonuses the managers get, and that does not make them minded to reduce those profits by one penny.

There is a moral dimension here, as you and I are aware, and the managers are probably aware of it too.

The difference is, they have the built-in ability to completely ignore the massive misery their policies create.

That's why they don;t question what they do, but we do, because we are not like them.

Which is why we are not managers.

And let's at least be grateful for that.

And who would pay the fuel companies? Remember it is the wholesale price that has gone up and that directly affects the companies that sell you fuel.

//How does it work when some energy companies are reporting huge profits //

It is the energy companies up front, Shell BP etc who made good profits not the resellers such as OVO, Scottish Power etc. They have to buy at market rates and so have to pass it on. And as for the main energy companies remember they make money on other things that contribute to that profit. A profit, which if you have a pension, you are partaking in.

You should be questioning the green levies and VAT first. They have no benefit
YMB, //time to get a ruddy grip//

I couldn’t agree more.
YMB - // //As opposed to telling them that 'Partygate' is less important?

I cant believe you wrote that. //

Fair enough - I can't believe that you think that anyone struggling with their energy bills would care about your perceived inequality in the seriousness of the two issues.

// One is annoyance the other is directly affecting peoples lives and pockets, of course they care more about the item affecting them directly. //

No, one is not an 'annoyance' - it speaks directly to the honesty and integrity of our government and our opposition.

If we can't trust them to be truthful with us, and they lie when caught out, what else are they lying about?

And how fit are they to legislate energy bills and cap price increases, as on the government can?

Can we trust them to be fair and honest there?

That's why 'party / beer gate' is a lot more than 'an annoyance'.

// You may trouser a good salary, as I do, and dont care about the increase but I have some compassion for those struggling. //

I don't trouser any salary, I am retired and living on a pension, so I may well have to make some adjustments in the coming months,
My electrical bill for April was 24 quid, and for March, a slightly colder month, was 37.
