Many many moons ago me and my OH went too Minorca and stopped in a villa. The owners greeted us when we arrived and showed us around. Before they left us to enjoy our stay they said by all means use what energy you need, but when not in use would you please turn off lights, because electric is very expensive here. No problem.

For 2 weeks I endured the OH reminding me to turn this off turn that off.
I remember saying at the time I wish you would practice this when we get home. I'm now getting my own back, guess who's getting crabby now being reminded to switch off. I've told her its easy to remember, if you can see, why put the light on in the first place, makes sense to me :0) Are you doing anything to save energy in the light of higher bills?

While I've no objection whatsoever to the idea of turning off lights that aren't needed, I will point out that it doesn't actually save a great deal of money:

Using LED bulbs, a bedroom might be lit by 10W and a living room by 18W. Leaving those on continuously would only cost around 5p and 9p per day, respectively. It's heating things that costs the most money, whether that be heating a room, heating the water in a washing machine, heating the air in a tumble dryer or heating the water in a kettle.

I already use minimal electricity for heating anyway. The only heater that's normally in use in my home is a single oil-filled electric radiator, which I try to use only on its lowest setting. I aim to keep my 'warm corner' (next to my desk) at around 16C, although I see from my thermometer that I can turn the thermostat down a bit right now, as the temperature is currently showing as around 17.5C. (I might just be a little bit naughty though, and leave it where it is. The cat on my knee seems to like it!)
I turn my heating of a little earlier and sir wrapped up in a throw. Very cosy.

Looking at the title of your question, shouldn't the word 'not' appear in there?
;)
I want to keep safe ,to that end everywhere is well lit.

Better in one piece than better off and falling over.
I used to be concerned about switching lights off. However as Chris points out, modern LED bulbs use so little electricity that I have stopped worrying now.
I'm always amused when people are trying to save the world, they worry about TVs left on standby.
You could save more electricity by putting a fraction less water in the kettle when you make tea.
Nobody likes to be continuously reminded….nagged…about trivialities.
i am sitting here in my oodie and scarf and fingerless gloves working
OP - don't be surprised if you find tinfoil in you sandwiches!
I just get cross when OH turns the lights off when I'm still in the room! I just wish he'd check first!! And he constantly turns the radiators down, and I turn them up again! He just doesn't seem to take in the fact that I'm not very mobile so feel the cold.
I've been about to walk down the stairs at night when OH puts landing light off! Also when emptying the tumble dryer, which is up on landing, the light how off. He is very annoying!
Modern lamps use very little power...you should be turning off (or not turning on) all those things rated 1500/2000/3000 watts and of course not using gas for heating or cooking at all!
I haven't been warm at all this winter, currently three knitted layers, and a hot water bottle. ( water heated in the microwave not a kettle). Room temp is around 15 degrees with a single night storage heater. The thought of each bill terrifies me as I know I have no scope to pay any more for fuel.
If I go to the toilet for eg. and some idiot has left all the lights on, I give myself a jolly good talking to. I live alone and get easily distracted ;-)
Oh, Rowan, that is very sad to read. There must be a lot of people doing the same. You're obviously doing the best you can.
Oh Rowan. That's so sad. Xx
Patsy, men can be successful a pain!!
They certainly can, Pat.. :-)
Patsy. I thought I typed such a pain. Obviously predictive text got me again.
