In a question yesterday, it was suggested that the UK could learn lessons from three Asian countries when trying to control the virus. One of them was China. So is this the way to go? Who would like to see this put into practice:

As I have said on many threads the problem is that we are a libertarian democracy and simply do not have open to us the necessary draconian measures that one party states like China have. The much maligned Track and Trace would work if backed up by brutal enforcement measures. At the mere mention of T&T we get bleating "I haven't got a smart phone.. etc" and no...

no one would im sure.
Yes, if its a tempory measure here (but for house party attenders, car sharing. gose visitors and other breaches, not walking for exercise.
you are kidding, tie someone to a tree bob....
obvs not tying to a tree but naming and shaming them wouldnt bother me as penalty notices /fines dont seem enough- am not sure many get paid

I'm asking about tying them to a tree by what seems to be the equivalent of our PCSOs, as in the article.
As said we dont agree to tying anyone to a tree but an approach closer to zero tolerance for a few weeks might send a message. Of course here it could backfire as protestors and lawyers would probly have a field day
you were also asked what intolerable measures were put in place by Taiwan (Australia and New Zealand were also suggested as countries that have managed to control Covid well). Any thoughts about those particular tyrannies?
I don't think the reason China has, or appears to have, a low rate of infection now and has had for some time, is becaus they have been tying people to trees.

Anyway, of course, the answer is no, because quite apart fronm anything else, it wouldn't work here.
I'd love to tie bobbinwales to a tree, it might shut him up for a bit.
someone would have a lawyer done there pretty quick to release the person, no doubt.
There were examples discussed other than china though weren't there New Judge... but we'll ignore those.

no, not in favour of tying people to trees. :)
ha! there's a few people i'd like to tie to a tree
Me too. I'd like to gag their stupid mouths too.
China had a big advantage apart from being repressive: the thing started there, so there was no danger of anyone bringing it into the country. They were close to the source.

Other countries have other advantages.
Iceland, which has very few trees, has nonetheless the advantage of being in the middle of nowhere, like New Zealand.
do we have enough trees?
As I have said on many threads the problem is that we are a libertarian democracy and simply do not have open to us the necessary draconian measures that one party states like China have. The much maligned Track and Trace would work if backed up by brutal enforcement measures. At the mere mention of T&T we get bleating "I haven't got a smart phone.. etc" and no government is going to do what would be necessary to make that work. Not saying they should either just explaining why they wont.
The other way to keep your numbers down is to lie about them like some of these countries must be doing. China rounds people up with the virus and puts in centres. Maybe there famlies never hear of them again.
And no, dont agree with that either!
Track or test and trace wouldn’t work very well because of the nature of the virus. It would have needed to be in force from the very start.
I see there’s a new lockdown in Beijing on the strength of 100 cases.
//The other way to keep your numbers down is to lie about them like some of these countries must be doing. //

Oh, come on .... they wouldn't do that .... would they? ;o)
I’ve never thought China was “lying” about its cases because: why would they do that or at least why would they do it now?
If anything they’d be more likely to overstate, as it gives a good excuse to control people, as we’ve seen
