//Reports suggest that a nine-year-old British girl got into difficulties in the water and her father and 16-year-old brother tried to rescue her.//

I could understand this happening in the sea, but in a hotel swimming pool? What on earth could have happened?

I agree. This seems very strange indeed.
Naomi -totally agree. The swimming pool was very small too. I can only assume they got stuck in the filter system at the bottom of the pool . Dreadful tragedy
Naomi I have been talking about this at home. I just can't comprehend how this happened in a swimming pool, 2 near adults drowning trying to save their little girl/sister. Was there no-one else around either? Horrific.
Apparently, any faults in Pool have been ruled out.Strange.
Pools can be dangerous because they have outlets and things at the bottom that people can get trapped in, especially if there are pumps sucking the water out. I've obviously no idea if that's relevant here, but that can happen.
Terrible story.
After ready that article I think my original explanation is nearer the mark. And if the suction pump was set so strongly that a swimmer could not break free then it is a fault with the Pool and its owners. This is horrible beyond contemplation I feel so sad for the family.
I got into difficulties in a hotel pool. Thankfully there were people there who dragged me out.

It’s not unfeasable that they all both had problems and couldn’t get near each other.
Terrible tragedy, I can't think what could have happened that defeated all three.
no idea how this could have happened, i was watching this on the news yesterday, the police there said it was a tragic accident?
kid sucked into the intake of a filter system
an coulddnt get out

sticking arm or leg in and getting it sucked in

OR - the two males couldnt swim but jumped in anyway
I fished a kid out of a pool in ethpanya
plenty plenty quig - child fully clothed stick in hand
less than a minute
and shouted in my beautiful tenor voice - "someone take this child please!"

and the owner of the child snatched here, went on talking to the guapos that I had cruelly interrupted and did a Miss Piggy act- "what are you a stranger doing with a soaked child in your arms, disgusting I say!"

I had nightnares about it for weeks after
my thoughts are similar to others that she go sucked somehow into the filter system, and the other two couldn't swim.
the three have been named in a update on BBC news
Perhaps we should await any results before blaming the pumping system.

People die in relatively small amounts of water, if none could swim it is more than possible.

And even if you can swim a panincking drowning person is dangerous. I did ASA lifesaving and did have occasion to use it. You have to come up behind them so they cannot grab them if you dont you are in trouble. I am (was) a very strong swimmer having done competition swimming believe me it's easy to get caught yourself.
Overdose of chemicals?
That's very possible Zacs, but that would have been very apparent to the divers.
a terrible tragedy whatever the cause.
No denying that Emmie

Apparently they could all swim.

Am I just cynical or does the appearance of a lawyer imply compensation is being sought. The police have independently checked the pool for problems and found none; the mother is denying that inability to swim was the cause.
