/// The rule from the departments of Justice and Homeland Security would prohibit migrants who have resided or "transited en route" in a third country from seeking asylum in the US, therefore barring migrants traveling through Mexico from being able to claim asylum and as a result, drastically limit who's eligible for asylum. ///

Pity our government won't act the same over the increasing numbers of asylum seekers crossing the Channel from safe country France.

I'd say yes he is right but right nowThe House of Representatives are calling for his impeachment and his various tweets etc aren't helping him, perhaps keeping his head down and closing his Twitter account would help ?
He said a few months ago Mexico was one of the most dangerous countries in the world so he may have problems.

'Under US law, migrants are allowed to claim asylum once on US soil. There's a caveat, however, for those who come through safe third countries, meaning countries that the US has entered into an agreement with. The United Nations' refugee agency defines "safe country," in part, as "being countries in which refugees can enjoy asylum without any danger."

But Trump's own statements on Mexico could undercut that definition. In tweets, the President has called Mexico "one of the most dangerous country's in the world" and claimed that the murder rate in the country has increased.

"The Coyotes and Drug Cartels are in total control of the Mexico side of the Southern Border. They have labs nearby where they make drugs to sell into the U.S. Mexico, one of the most dangerous country's in the world, must eradicate this problem now. Also, stop the MARCH to U.S." Trump tweeted in April.'

Yes and don't you agree that this is the result on the increasing numbers of migrants from countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador entering Mexico in their quest to seek asylum in the USA?

Can you blame Trump for protecting his country from such an increasing number of criminals?
It's not his country though, is it. It's quite ironic, Turmps position.. I thinks.
Spath if it's not his country, then who's is it?
When I talk of England I would say it was 'my country'
POTUS is only applying US statutes which are very similar to our own which we are entitled to enact but don’t have the will and the French have forgotten the acts apply to their responsibilities with regard asylum .seekers also.I am referring to the Dublin Convention and earlier Hague Convention.
I believe he is correct and entitled to do so.
Looks like he had a vision of ‘The Great March’ and the foresight to expedite the “wall’ which Obama started and didn’t complete.

My understanding is that people have to seek asylum in the first safe country they get to. As far as the UK concerned that's usually anywhere but here, as most of them come via mainland Europe, all of which is safe.

As TCL points out though, Trump's shot himself in the foot a bit by declaring Mexico to be one of the most dangerous countries in the world, implying that migrants won't be safe until they reach the states.

I don't blame him for trying to address the problem on their southern border though. They can't accommodate everyone who isn't safe in central America - it's pretty much the whole population.
The ITV News at 10 last night reported that last years figures for Mexicans illegally crossing thew Rio Grande was becoming a trickle ( a mere 3,000 per annum). However the Guatemalans and Honduran contingent et al amounted to something like 33,000.
Although the U.S. is a large country with regard to open space I don't think the welfare and infrastructure could sustain uninvited guests at those numbers each year and why should they have to.
A popular bumper sticker in the U.S. reads, ' Work Harder. Millions on Welfare Rely on You'. Already a welfare problem there and Mr Trump will lose a lot of support from the Americans if he allows thousands of more Itinerants into the country

How has he shot himself in the foot? Mexico is one of of the most dangerous countries in the world, perhaps not in the top 10, but still in the list. He has not implied that migrants won't be safe until they reach the States, but the fact is that they will be.
yeah ya gotta laugh at trump again

Bring me your huddled masses.... ( statue of liberty )

Ok thanks. Interesting link.
Yes, he has it right regard less of 'laws' or conventions.

His voters will applaud him the liberals will decry him. The World will continue to turn
That's the norm isn't it ? Unless one transited via a further unsafe country. The puzzle is why authorities don't ensure that the rules are complied with.
Having reached a safe country one is no longer seeking refuge and thus no longer a refugee. So by definition they can't go on without permission of the next country they wish to enter as at that point they are trying to be immigrants.
OG, Are you not confusing immigrants with asylum seekers?
