It does of course completely undermine the usual suggestion from Brexiters that Bercow is some kind of liberal. He isn't. He comes from the right of the Tory party, where these views are by no means unusual.

Ten years ago when he became Speaker, Professor Anthony King who taught Bercow at Essex University Commented: "When he was a student here, he was very right-wing, pretty stroppy, and very good. “
