Spent time today shampooing carpets. At his "do" the other night he managed to knock over a full bottle of red. It went everywhere. We poured a load of salt onto it and left it. Today we shampooed it. It's a large rectangular rug, thankfully the main carpet that's a beigy colour didn't get affected.
At the moment said rug is draped over dining table to dry out. I can still see some stains on it so will have to try something else tomorrow.

white wine is usually the best thing to put on red wine stain
That's parties for you, I have a long list firmly stored in memory banks I'd rather not bring to the fore - hope you get it sorted.
rule 1 of parties
take wine that matches the carpet
Isn't there sugar in wine - once sugar hits the carpet - very hard to get rid
seems the white wine could be a myth, I googled and this cane up on a lot of sites http://spotremoval.coit.com/how-to-remove-red-wine-out-of-carpet

So that means that there's going to be massive water mark in the polished top of your dining table. Oh well, they say that one thing leads to another . . .
