I think that most folk are aware of this nowadays, but here's a quick explanation...
//Psychological projection is a theory in psychology in which humans defend themselves against their own unconscious impulses or qualities (both positive and negative) by denying their existence in themselves while attributing them to others// Wiki.

Is it a case that humans are predisposed to condemning in others, that which we cant face in ourselves?
A couple of examples...My ex father in law never liked me because I was an ex con with a few violent related offences against my name. It turned out that he beat his first wife up(my ex's mother). I was convicted of violent crimes , he wasn't, and he buried it in his memory.
Someone else I knew hated same sex relationships with a passion. (perverts, homos, queers etc) Yet had no problem with viewing lesbian porn.

This question has in part been inspired by Eccles post below re: attitudes towards overweight people. Islay pointed out that she'd love to see some of these 'bodies beautiful' that are making derogatory remarks about others. I agree with her.

Possibly,
:0)
You seem to be suggesting it is a factor in anyone who criticises. I think it's supposed to be much rarer than that.

Eleena, Carl Jung talked about our shadow selves...our dark parts. If we acknowledge them, then no, we wouldn't be hypocrites. We would be honest with ourselves.
Nailit, how did you go on with getting a psychology section on here? I'd be really interested, you always get plenty of replies to these questions, why not!

Don't think ive suggested that OG.
Just an invitation to question ur motives for criticizing in the first place.
Doesn't a hypocrite do that, deny the existence of their actions whilst condemning others? Am I mixed up there?
I apologise Nailit,I hadn't read Eccles' post when I put answer on.
I see where you are coming from but I generally put the majority down to rude, intolerant and judgemental people.

About as successful as getting a philosophy section Eleena.
Bob hope.
I think that, sometimes, the things that we dislike most in others are our own worse faults. I think that this is usually subconscious.

I am not really a 'people person' but I am interested in and confused by human behaviour.

I find feline and, to a lesser extent, canine psychology fascinating.
How about it 'new' Ed? Both fascinating topics!
I wish I was drunk.

eh?

I alway thought that Sun Tzu (The Art Of War) recommended that one should always accuse an opponent or enemy of what you are yourself guilty. This immediately negates the largest portion of their defence. It sounds pretty weak to say nooo that was you. It may certainly be attributed to Saul Alinsky more recently.
