This seems to crop up when sports events are on (like last week).

You have a friend who supports Wales, and surprises you by saying they're Welsh (the same rule seems to apply to Scottish). The conversation goes something like ...

I didn't know you were Welsh.
Yes, my grandmother was born in Cardiff.

Or ... Yes, my great grandparents were from Swansea.

Or ... Yes, I had a friend who went to Tenby on holiday.

Or ... Yes, I saw it on a map once.

Or ... Yes, I own a Shirley Bassey CD.

Anyone who is a quarter Welsh, or an eighth Welsh, but mostly English, claims to be Welsh.

Is it a purity thing?

To be English, you have to be pure English. If you have any Welsh ancestry, you can no longer be English, and you have to settle for being Welsh?

Or what?

I have a friend who is as English as English, probably never even been to Wales, very English private school voice, makes me sound like a Sussex yokel, but said she'd prefer Wales to win against England in Canada last week.

Nothing against the Welsh. In fact, having stayed at Celtic Manor, I'm possibly Welsh myself. Just curious.

Oh, the other common factor among the fake Welsh people is that they'd never consider living in Wales. Or Scotland. Or wherever.

At the risked of being tarred and feathered, there are a lot of people from that small corner of the UK who I call "professional" Welsh.
I guess pride in your nationality is a good thing, but some are completely OTT
You need a cwtch.
Morning MrsO xxxx
Gerroff me sweaty!
Good morning to you too sweaty :-)
people who have driven through Yorkshire seem to have the same problem.
adds Baza's name to the book
I agree completely. My stepdad is 7/8 English and 1/8 Welsh. Whenever Wales are involved in any sport, he suddenly becomes "Welsh" and can justify it any way you like:-)
How to wind up a Welsh person= Tell them Wales is not a country, it is only a principality, they tend to go a bit apoplectic :)

It's odd, isn't it.

The " pride in your nationality" seems to apply even if the significant part of your nationality is something different.

I suppose those of us from "this corner of the UK" should probably claim to be French because we probably all have a bit of froggy blood in us after the Norman conquest.
I'm the opposite, my Mother was born in Wales, but being as I was born in England I'm English IMO!
We're a bit mongrellish in our house and can generally choose to side with whoever wins ( except the Welsh). My Mum is English, my Dad is northern Irish ( to that's Ireland because he's a Cat lick) and my Mum's boyfriend is Scottish (not a plastic one, a really born in glasgow one), so there's mass cheering for all sorts, and if we really get stuck my Mum was also married to a German ;-)
Sharing an, do you really share a house with your Dad, your Mum, her ex husband and her boyfriend?

That's very errr....liberal ;-)
No, although they do all turn up for parties and holidays:) I share with my mum and her current boyfriend (Scottish) before that with her and her German husband (I have half German brothers and sisters) and before that with my Mum and Dad ( Irish half brothers ). I think that idea might appeal top my Mum though ;-)
Being Welsh maybe more a state of mind rather then an actuality.
// You need a cwtch. //

Yes please.

WR.
I just had to google cwtch. Apparently it's a restaurant in St David's, Wales!

Ohhh!! ... I see.

I was reading it as "cooch" ... which is another word for your front bum.

I thought WR seemed a bit keen!!
There isn't such a thing as Pure English though, we'll all mongrels, there's a bit of Harold Hardrader in all of us (I won't say which bit, LOL)
Is Vinnie Jones really Welsh ?.
