It would seem that William Hague is being made the scrape-goat for the decision to take SAS troops into Libya.

/// Mr Hague said the decision to send special forces into the country had been taken after ‘professional and military advice’.///

Surely the last word in all this should rest upon the PM's shoulders, because I would have thought that his permission would have had to be gained first.

Hague has admitted his responsibility for the event, I loved the comment from the opposition that if Hague goes to visit his mates, does he climb over the fence in the middle of the night. Sounds like a real hash to me, the people the envoys were supposed to meet didn't know it was them. I don't know how much is delegated to Govt dept., DC can't surely know it all at any one minute?
Neither
They came up with a plan and it failed.............and................?

Not all plans are going to turn out exactly as we desire, unfortunately.
Fortunately Military and Diplomatic cоck ups like this are few and far between (or so we are told).

Don't forget, the Conservatives were out of office for 13 years, so they are on a learning curve, and we should expect them to be useless at first.

No one was hurt, unlike our other recent adventures and no Prime Ministers resigned over that.

Oh Ok then that explains the cuts and the police don't worry about your house getting burgled git it a couple of years and well know what were doing.

You get very tolerant in your absences Gromit.
Is goat-scraping to be included in the Olypmics?
Neither should resign. It was not a massive life taking disaster and far less humiliating than the sailors captured by Iran recently.

BTW a good friend of mine is at pains to point out it was not SAS but SBS the special boat services. To us little difference, to them a massive massive distinction.
should have sent in Mark Thatcher and his merry men ,, in a fleet of land rovers.
I personally don't believe William Hague or any other member of our Government have anything to stand down for.

The mission to escort a British diplomat, was not a covert one and therefore, the tactics used, would not have been of a covert nature. It is due to this reason that the SBS, not the SAS (as correctly pointed out in a previous statement), were 'comprimised'. The notion that the SBS were captured and treated with hostility by the rebel forces, has been forced down our throats by almost every major branch of media the World has to offer. In fact, the SBS were mereley repremanded by the rebels and civily asked a few questions. Would'nt you stop 9 foreign men who were walking through your neighbourhood and ask them what they were doing?

In conclusion, it is clear that this event, as with all political issues, has been greatly exagerated and blown out of proportion in order to sell news and attempt to sway people's political stance.

Er? I don't think so somehow.
Very noticeable that a guy called Mitchell who achieved fame dishing out £bns of aid to overseas countries has assumed spokesman for dealing with Libya. It was rumoured on the grapevine that Haque will stand down and be replaced by this silicon smoothed talking Mitchell.
With reference to another old git's comment on the question I asked about 9 foreign men, it would seem that you are being slightly pedantic. I obviously meant would you stop them if you were armed, as the rebels were?
Neither should resign.

I do think they would get the PM's nod. As the leader of the goverment he is ultimately responsible for any actions the goverment takes. If everytime we sack a goverment leader or head of department for every military blunder/mistake, we would be sacking people left, right and chelsea. (beauty of hind sight)
