I saw this house on the TV this morning and even though its very nice I honestly think I would rather have something smaller and not so grand (honest) if money was no object.

I think you could still have a beautiful home with taste than something like this that to me just looks so OTT and it looks like you are trying to prove to anyone who is bothered that you are seriously rich and need to shout it from every room. Why does anyone need a solid gold floor and 5 swimming pools ???

I would have a beautiful, tasteful home but certainally not something like this, I would rather privately give money away to worthwhile causes or people than to live like this.

I guess it would depend on what my needs were if I were a billionaire. If my personal life were as it is now, e.g. relatively small family, average number of friends, then I'd have absolutely no use for 103 bedrooms.  However if I were that rich and had friends and family in all corners of the globe that i would want to jet over on a regular basis for lavish parties, then I could see I might have a need for a residence that large! Let's not forget that many billionaires do have philanthropic interests and do use their wealth to help others, so we shouldn't be quick to judge their ostentatious tastes.

Rather have a cosy cottage.  I too saw it on TV this morning and it is just like a hotel.  Even has a bar when you come in the front door.  I would imagine it might be sold as an extremely upmarket hotel, subject, I suppose, to planning permission.

However, it would be nice to live their for a weekend, along with 200 or so staff to cook, clean and pamper, etc.

I'm with Miss Zippy on that one - with my current lifestyle in mind it would be insane to live in that type of house but if I'd grown up in an unspeakably lavish environment, this type of house was normal to me and I had plans to have enough people stay over regularly to fill those bedrooms then I'd obviously consider it.
I can't really imagine living beyond a short walk from all the necessary local amenities so country mansions aren't my cup of tea at all regardless of how insanely rich I am.

No, not really.  I heard that the electricity bill alone a year would be �200,000.  But then, if I was a billionaire then maybe yes.

what would annoy me most is trying to find someone...friend, partner, child...in the vast array of rooms.  As for wondering if you forgot to let the cat in - what a headache!!!!

I just don't see this sort of place as a home.  It's a house, yes and a big one at that, but it doesn't seem at all homely.
