Oh dear. Christian Voice, the religious group who kicked up such a fuss about Jerry Springer - The Opera has just forced a cancer charity to reject a donation of 3k from Jerry Springer - The Opera.  This it did by contacting the charity and threatening to demonstrate outside their offices and warning that christians may stop donating to the charity if they were to accept the gift.  Justified or just plain selfish?

Their actions are possibly one of the least Christian-like acts I've ever heard of.  To prevent a charity from taking money that would DO GOOD and SAVE LIVES, and to do it in such a bullying manner, just because the source of that money displeases them, is hideous and repugnant to me.

Totally in agreement here

I'd advise the charity to accept the donation and see the reaction from people ... real christians included may I add ... that are appauled at their actions.

Who could bring themselves to demonstrate against a cancer charity!! Can you imagine burning effigies of Marie Curie!?

So Elfin, Selfish - Yes. Narrow minded - Yes. Nothing better to do with their time - quite likely. Enjoying the publicity of their last stunt - definitely.

I hadnt heard about this but if its true (no reason to doubt you!) then its absolutely disgusting.  Is it any wonder so many people are turning away from religion when you have psychos like these giving it a bad name? These people are using religion as an excuse to intimidate and bully, the same way as thugs use football as an excuse to be violent.
Have to agree with the previous answers, on both counts. To refuse a charitable donation on the grounds of objection to its source seems somewhat bigoted and counter-productive. To do so by what amounts to intimidation appears un-Christian, ironic given the organisation involved.

Completely agree with all the other postings. Unfortunately I can't say I'm surprised. Religious groups are often full of blinkered, bigoted people who wouldn't know a charitable act if it bit them on the backside.

Religion always has, and always will, cause most of the world's problems.

Small minded little drones desperately striving for the limelight over and above their religion. Pathetic, inferior people.
Christian Voice - puting the fun into fundamentalism.

---------------------------or--------------------------

Fundamentalism......now coming to a Christian Church near you!
Agree with all the above. I really abhor this type of behaviour. This group's actions are more offensive and damaging than Jerry Springer - the Opera could ever be.

I don't think if someone close to you is affected by cancer you're going to be too worried where the funding came from.  That money could have saved lives.

Were Christian Voice willing to donate the same amount themselves?

Nothing to add really - I'm in total agreement with previous posts.

Just to play Devil's Advocate (groan) though:

If a female vicar was offered 1 Million pound charity donation if she posed naked in Playboy, should she do this?

What would the Church's view be then?

Considering it would be all for Charity, surely she should do it? It would surely be 'unCHristian' not too.....think of what that 1 Million could buy.......

Don't you just love spin......

Good point oneeyedvic, tho not quite a direct comparison to this post, as the charity itself was not asked to do anything that was in conflict with its' beliefs.  If the female vicar was offered the money for charity by someone else that posed for Playboy, then should she accept it?    Still an interesting debate for the vicar/church involved tho.

No as Kick3m0n says there's a fundamental (groan) difference here. The charity was Maggie's centre which is not (I believe) a christian institution. It was not their sensibilities that were outraged by the source of the money but an unrelated group Christian Voice - who also threatened to protest outside Maggie's Centre if they accepted the money.

You could understand the situation if the charity had been Christian Aid - but this was an unrelated bunch of "head the balls" with an axe to grind.

If you have a look at Christian Voice's website you'll quickly see what their agenda is - The emphasis is clearly on Voice and not on Christian. They'll be pretty happy with the publicity they got especially on Radio 4 - best way to hit people like this is to utterly ignore them. Hopefully that is what the Today editors will do in future

It would be nice ifl the press could make an issue of this, and show these "people" up as the scumbags they truly are. Will they give Ken Livingstone/homosexuals/single mothers a day off for once and persecute some genuinely evil lowlife instead?

Or not?

I don't think I'll hold my breath.

Is someone offering, oneeyedvic? I just might.... then again...
bit sorry that the centre just refused the money without a fight though

Noooo Littleoldme! the last thing we need is for the press to have a go at CV, they'd end up with a reputation and a name outweighing their two man and a donkey status. Then every rightwing Christian fundamentalist would come knocking on their door and they'd grow.

Ignored they'll wither on the vine.

Of course if you want to tell them what you think give them a ring - their National Director has his mobile phone number on the website here

http://www.christianvoice.org.uk/Contact.htm

that's how desperate they are to be recognised

Wow - just been on their website - its unbelievable in its arogance!

Whatever happened to casting the first stone????
Whilst communism didn't have a lot going for it,at least they didn't encourage religion and royalty!!!!
jake-the-peg - I see your point, although I'd have thought any right-wing Christian fundamentalist nutters would already be members! Maybe the best policy is to ignore them. It's tempting to laugh at them, but when charities are intimidated into refusing donations and television producers have to go into hiding because they've shown a slightly dubious programme it doesn't seem so funny.

oneeyedvic - I had a look at their website too, just out of morbid curiosity ( the way some people slow down to enjoy a good car crash). Abortion is the Christian Holocaust? Honestly, you couldn't make it up - and they say Ken Livingstone is offensive to Jews.
