Comet charging 10% when you return goods

I took a xmas present back to Comet, it was a book reader & adaptor total £147 , as I queued to return I saw for the first time a big notice on the wall by the returns desk stating if you returned goods that had been opened you would be offered a full refund only if you accept a credit note but if you want your cash back they would deduct 10 %, which I thought was a cheek as the item had not been used, after demanding to see the manager I was given a full refund on the grounds that the item had been "miss sold" to me but it took me a long time to convince the manager etc.
How long has this been going on ? after having always bought at Comet, I will find somewhere else in future, nobody before me in the queue seemed to challenge this ruling.

Just out of interest how was this "miss sold" to you?
If there was nothing faulty with the book reader, Comet was not obliged to give you the money back or a credit note. Did you buy it or was it given to you as a gift? Strictly speaking, even if it had been faulty and you had not bought it, only the original purchaser would have had the right to a full refund and not you.
I think retailers are being very generous in accepting returns at all. They are not obliged to unless the goods are not as described, or faulty.
I don't know how it was mis sold to you, as you received it as a gift.
I think you've got a cheek, to be honest.
What about if someone bought you an item of clothing (obviously not from comet) and it doesn't fit you? do they not have to give you a refund?
Maybe Dee asked for something and the person got the wrong one . . . just a guess

mollykins, no they don't. Not unless the store advertises that they give full refunds within a certain period.

maybe its a good thing that my dad does his shopping on or in the few days before christmas eve
umm, your reply to my other question is silly (not you, the shops) i mean if the item is in a brand new condition (my dad doesn't even bother to take off the perferated price bit off of the tag) and it doesn't fit what else are you going to do with it?
well it does fit, it jsut looks hidious on me, its the wrong colours for me and makes me look like a size 16/18, when its a 10, i can fit xomfortably in some 10s but if you look at me, especially if i have a bulky coat on, i don't look like a size 10/12, so i'll say it doesn't fit and and they'll look at me and think an idiot bought this and there's no way it'll fit me.
Most shops would give you a refund/credit note. They just don't have to.

I am always very pleasant and just say " this was a present from my dozey dad and it doesn't fit" then wait while you count slowly to 10. Most times they will fill gap in conversation by saying " we only give credit notes " or " "would you like to have a refund?" If they offer to exchange it smile again and say that it doesn't suit you at all and wait again. but remember they don't have to offer you anything as the contract ( legally speaking ) is with the purchaser not the giftee. Good luck. I am off to do some un-shopping today.
There would be a long q for the changing rooms if they kept to the letter of the law and people would stop buying gifts for others. Either way the retailer would loose out. Therefore it is in their best interest to refund or exhange that is why many of them do.
Dock, i assume you're a man so i'll explain this to you simply. There are diferent shaped clothes, which suit different shaped women, but because there would be riots if every shape was not made in every size, you end up with people wearing the wrong cut for them. I believe this top has an empire line, which is for flat chested people and i think it shouldn't be made in a size bigger than an 8 but its a ten that i jsut about squeeze into and i look hidious. It fits but not properly.
