Live now on news channels, bodies of the latest servicemen, 8 in all, killed in Afghanistan, being removed from the plane at RAF Lyneham.

They selflessly gave their lives for us. How many more? Is it (still) / Has it ever been worth it?

There is danger of reduplicating this thread which has already started on CB.

sqad:

I wasn't aware of that, however, I think that News is a more appropriate thread for this subject than CB.
I posted about this on cb as i didn want it hijacked by numpty news war moaners.

The soldiers were doing a job they chose. The ultimate price of that is kill or be killed. The alternative is to have no army and dont fight.Pcifists will say thats a good idea. But im sure there would be far more death and destruction if there was no opposition to terrorists and their threats.

They chose the road they walked and now they are at rest .Respect their choice and their sacrifice.
paraf.....LOL

leggy....I am for the war, but that isn't the point..........our elected Government is for the war and that is the bottom line.
Squad there should be no debate when discussing these guys.To do so would detract from them.

They were soldiers.
leggy...no there shouldn't, but there is..........read the question.
SQUAD ITS A NON QUESTION IN MY OPINION.

COMPARE IT TO THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME FROM JULY 1916.

1 July 1916, on which the British suffered 57,470 casualties, including 19,240 dead—the bloodiest day in the history of the British Army.

HAS THAT STOPPED WAR ?HAS IT STOPPED SOLDIERS FIGHTING AND DYING FOR THEIR COUNTRY?
leggy......hold it.....I agree.

I've asked questions on this subject on this thread. Please do me the courtesy of not turning it into a CB rant.

If you don't want to discuss it reasonably, please don't bother. If you do, fine.
Sorry hit caps.
Im not arguing im strongly behind the soldiers.I watched the documenatries from afghanistan with ross kemp ( who had a great deal of respect for the soldiers and the job they were doing there) and it looked a terrible conflict which im sure is far worse when you cant return home after filming , but continue whilst friends fall around you.
Theres no more i can say paraffin .Its a non question. The sodliers are volunteers not conscripts. If the question was about the vietnam war or the poor argentine kids sent to the falklands to fight the british professionals who these young kids could never hope to beat.Even for the british id say that was a stupid war, if you would call it that.

Please paraffin give me the respect of answring a question without trying to be derogatory or derisory.

This is exactly why i posted in cb.I wanted to mention the guys.not start a war debate as there are umpteen in the news section and it dilutes with reading.
When considering this you have to remeber that 2 of the 7/7 bombers Shehzad Tanweer and Mohammad Sidique Khan were trained by Al Qaeda

These killed 52 civillians and injured 700

You don't have to prevent many more such incidents in order to justify the army deaths.

Of course you can argue that the army is an inefficient way of doing this and you'd be more effeciant making drastic cuts in the armed forces and putting the money into improved intelligence and security.

But then you'd probably just be full of David Davis whining about too many CCTV cameras.

I fully respect your right to your opinion and you are certainly entitled to it.
I happen to take a different view, but that's one of the reasons we all post, isn't it? We'd be pretty damned odd if our answers were all identical. Good on you. At least you care enough to have an opinion.
Praffin your opinion may differ. However who are you to tell these soldiers they shouldnt be there? They are the tool of defense of this country. They fight this countrys battles be they near or far.You can argue all day long but as long as young men are willing to fight and die for their country there will be wars.

There can be no war without soldiers to fight .
The last soldier from the plane was seeking to change battalion on his return form afghanistan so he could be redeployed.he believed completely in what the british army was doing. His family are fiercely proud of him and what he did .

On that point ill leave the debate because theres nothing can be said in my opinion that wouldnt denegrate the memory of the sodliers who have died and their families .

In my opinion.

Thanks for the chance to have my say .

"There can be no war without soldiers to fight ."

And they can be no war without Government to sanction it.

Paraffin questions the validity of this war....that is all.

We have been there since October 7, 2001.

184 British troops have died so far. Mostly they have died one or two a week so hardly anyone notices. Most people do not give them a second thought. There coffins are not shown live on television, the politicians may mention them briefly before they start bickering and point scoring.

I has taken several fatalities in a short time to wake us up.

Being the World's policeman's deputy is expensive in lives as well as Cash.

I think you've got me all wrong. I've only posed questions. I've not said that those are opinions I hold, have I? You've chosen to jump to a conclusion.

sqad's right, all I'm asking is opinions about the validity, or otherwise, of our involvement in Afghanistan.

I'm an ex squaddie myself, over 15 years service, in the not too distant past, therefore I think I've a fairly reasonable idea of what motivates our service personnel.

Therefore, I'm not telling our people they shouldn't be there, but many people are and I was of a mind to find out what others thought, that's all.

My personal opinion has "wavered" over the years but I'll always have the utmost respect for anyone who signs on the dotted line in a Forces recruiting office.
