One of the detectives said he thought some of the bystanders in question went home that night and took a good hard look in the mirror and didn't like what they saw.

I can't really understand why architects cannot make car parks and other such structures less likely to attract suicide attempts. It would only take a few twinks for it less possible for emotionally disturbed people to be unable to hurl themselves from a height...it is so sad for lives to be lost needlessly when the person might eventually calm down
As for the people who shout for people to jump, I think they are really despicable. Even if they think they will shock the person into reconsidering, that is still really disgraceful....

londonlove - jumping from a height is only one way to commit suicide. If someone wasn't able to do it that way, they would use another method. Unfortunately there is no way to create a world where suicides cannot happen.

There is a section society that appears to be detached from the mainstream. They seem to be devoid of guilt, responsibility and morality. Most of these detached people are young people but some are older and should know better.

For most people, egging someone on to kill themselves is despicable � or rather, unimaginable. But for some people it�s nothing more than a �laugh�. Maybe they thought he wouldn�t really do it. Maybe they wanted to see someone expire up close and personal. Who knows?

What I do know is that I�m only 37 years old; I�m not an old fogey. I remember being at school and although we weren�t angels, we never damaged property, never threatened anyone, never stole anything, never swore at an adult, etc.

In my short lifetime I have seen society nose-dive in terms of social responsibility, morality and general adherence to the law.

I am greatly concerned about the society we are living in and I fear for the future.

I once knew a traffic policeman who was regularly called to fatal road accidents. He told me that there were many occasions where he attended accidents where all occupants of a vehicle had perished. He told me that they learned not to become emotional about it or they wouldn't be able to do their job.

He said that as soon as they left the scene thay had to forget all about it or it would send you round the bend.

It�s easy to blame it on the Labour party � but it goes back further than that. I don�t think it was their fault. I�m no Labour supporter, but on this issue, I think they inherited a problem and then exacerbated it � through a series of well-meaning but ultimately badly thought out pieces of legislation and policy.

I think it would be foolish to play the blame game on any one particular party for the seemingly �immoral minority� we are living with today.

I�m a former police officer Amber63. So I can understand your friend�s comments. When you regularly see dead people (as I regularly did), you do become slightly �detached� because, as your friend said, he had, �...learned not to become emotional�. But that does not mean you stop feeling emotion. You block it. It�s the only way you can do your job.

But you do only �block� it. They all hit you. Every one of them. Eventually.

I think the CPS needs to issue the police a little guidance on these things.

It is an offence to encourage someone to commit suicide.

Next time it happens we need the police to arrest a few of these people - a few well reported prosecutions might go a long way to cutting down on this sort of behaviour

By the way Amber there was a plane crash in New York - if you try really hard I'm sure you can blame the Government for that too!

amber63 - seeing a dead body is one thing, I have dealt with dead bodies all my working life.

Watching someone commit suicide after you have engaged with them intensely for 90 minutes is another thing altogether - especially when your job is to talk them down.
