Are the Chinese right in their belief that the number 8 is lucky, since they chose to open their Olympics at 8.08pm on 8/08/08?

Or was Edmund Burke, the 18th century politician right, when he famously said 'superstition is the religion of feeble minds' ?

some would say religion is the religion of feeble minds. What the difference is between believing in the luckiness of 8 and the holiness of (say) St Pancras, I have no idea. But I find it hard to be worried by either of these.
I'd say St Pancras is pretty holy, now thay've opened that fab new champagne bar there.
yes i think its true, chinese people have strong beliefs that number 8 is a lucky number... but not into that extreem???
welll it dosnt mean lucky as such it just number 8 in cantonese (not sure about mandrine i assume its the same) means 'rich' as chinese loves money very much lol
thats why we all love number 8.
i assume everyone have their own lucky number,

its just like here where Number 7 is Lucky. any reason why?? x
From what I can understand of it (from my rather patchy Cantonese) it's a kind of Chinese pun.
2 and 8 in Hakka (pronounced hat-gar) dialect is ya and ba (get rich is "fa ba") I think it stems from there.
Of course my Cantonese is'nt brilliant and I've only ever dated Cantonese girls so I can't speak for the Manchu's etc. and there is another Cantonese dialect that counts slightly different cklah, clee, clam, cee (1.2.3.4) to sum up.
i don't know, but a bit of useless information for you all...
123Everton!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my Dad speaks Hakka, i only speak broken cantonese! its soo rubbish, so are u chinese or hong kongnese?? lol
or like me B.B.C??

i have never ever dated chinese! all English/Scottish and Irish! lol... i wonder what Welsh r like??
Sorry I'm Englsh through and through.
LOL
Apparently the Welsh are very good at Hui San Cantonese (I think it's all that ack ack ack in the vowels!)
Moi yup dee Guangdong moir.
oh Everton i had an impression that you were since u seem to know soo much, more than me infact, my parents always say that im a Typical British person ....... dunno what they mean by that!!

dont talk to me about other chinese langauges cos i dont know any .. apart from Hakka (which only my dad and sis in law speaks), mandrin and cantonese (which is broken cantonese lol) cant work out what ur saying the first half but can the second part... something about speaking Cantonese?? :)

Lay ho ma? lay gong tong wah? lol
Moi (I?) yup dee (a little) Guangdungmoir (Cantonese).
Ng sec teng on the latter!
I've dated 3 Cantonese girls the first one was a snotty cow, the second one never really left the womb (still has'nt) and the third (who I'm with now) is clever and gutsy, mad as a box of frogs especially for Haagen daazs ice cream (so I suppose she's easily pleased) she makes a nice fish soup though
lol Everton.....

dont think im wanna date chinese guys :P they dont apeal to me, well to be honest i hardly know any Chinese ppl! all my mates are White/English or Asian. but since moving back to Leeds from Liverpool, they all are English! yippi! lol
Tough one to call! LOL
I'm gonna duck that one.
Whereabouts in Liverpool where you living?
It'll be tomorrow when I answer back as I'm off to bed now.
Different beliefs, different folks: that's why war is still 'popular'. You ask if they are right or wrong in their belief. "Right' or 'wrong' is a moral, perhaps a philosophical issue. Only the 'winners' get to decide and write the books.
It's not lucky for all the people who are going to get run over by a bus today.
or for the ones who lose money betting on the horses....
the chinese also believe that a baby should be made to kiss a fish eye, so that the child grows up being clever...........go figure lol
From my understanding of Chinese people they spend the majority of their time in casinos. They need all the luck they can get.
We really need Oneyedvic's input here. I believe he is part Chinese.

Yes, where's Vic? Maybe he's been run over by a bus.
..I hope it wasn't the number 8 bus. That would be a cruel irony.
Booldawg:
the reason why most chinese ppl spend there time at the casino cos its the only time they socialise with their mates, After feeding hundreds of hungry ppl every week they deserve it. and they finish work at midnight what else can they do?? though my parents have stopped going for many years!!

Everton i lived in the city centre, opposite lime street, u know those new block of flats? i lived there for 3 years :) x

whose Oneyedvic?
