No, it certainly was not a surprise.
However, why should the people of Henley not elect somebody whom they think will best represent their interests? It is true that Henley is quite an affluent area. Average house prices, if that is your measure of affluence, is about �550k. This is a little unadjacent to the �4m you quote but it is nonetheless quite likely that the people there have a bob or two.
What many may see as more of a surprise is that Labour came fifth, behind both the Green Party and the BNP. I personally don�t see it as a surprise, especially in Henley. What surprises me is that there over a thousand souls there (or indeed anywhere else) who are prepared to vote for a Labour Party candidate.
Having said that, of course, there is no guarantee that the good burghers of Henley will find themselves any better off under a Tory government, particularly one led by David Cameron. In just the same way as people without money would like to acquire some, those with it would like to keep as much as possible of it and there is little likelihood of them being any more able to do so should we experience a change in government.
Nonetheless �rich� people have needs and requirements just as �poor� people do and they are entitled to have their say.

Since Labour came to power, there have been 3 previous by-elections where the fight was been a tory or a Lib Dem. In each, the Labour Candidate lost his deposit, but the Labour Party won the next election.

if they carry on at this rate the country will be so totally kerried that labour wont be able to afford to put up a deposit ,

And New Judge what surprised me is that over a thousand people in Henley voted for the BNP. The Tory on Five Live Breakfast called the BNP disgusting etc.. I'm not going to get into whether they are or not but the three major parties should not be dismissing them. People obviously want to vote for them and the major parties should be finding out why and trying to address some of these issues.

I think the 1,000 Labour voters in Henley just go to show that not all voters are exclusively self-serving. Hanging on to every penny isn't the primary concern of some of the electorate.
But of course, rich people who look out for number one (as is their right) are just as entitled to plitical representation as anyone else.
