I just read this article by ex-footballer Graham Le Saux;

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/footbal l/premier_league/article2419068.ece

It's all about how people thought he was gay during his career (he wasn't) and how it nearly drove him out of the game.

What would be the reaction to an openly gay footballer now?

so what if he's gay shouldn't be a problem in this day and age and if it is i'm sure there will be major uproar
There are already gay players.

Remeember the west ham player stabbed by his wife about ten years ago? He was caught in bed with a team mate.

Hopefully a better reaction than this one:

I don't remember that stabbing? I remember Justin Fashanu and he was driven to suicide.
He used to blatantly flaunt reading th Guardian.

Given that there are over 400 player in the English Premiership, the chances are that their are quite a few gay players now.

Isn't John O Shea out?
I thought they where all a bunch of Ginger Beers!
Judging by how easily "they go down" for free kicks I think the majority of the premier league players are irons.
Really....not being a football follower I'm gobsmacked that there is no openly gay players!
More than likely about 10% are gay.
I have no doubt that there are many gay players..however the question mentions 'openly' gay.

There aren't many of those are there?
True, but football will never accept gays as it is classed as a mans sport.

Yes Neil, I've often wondered why it's called a man's sport I mean most of the players behave like a bunch of school girls. I mean rolling aound in agony all the time because their Alice Band has come off! would suprise be at all if most of them turned out to be gay.
Gives an all new meaning to "getting an early bath"
I couldn't care less where any West Brom player parked his sausage if he scored a hat-trick against the Wolves.

I reckon Rugby has lots more gay players than footie.
All that rolling around on the floor, grappling, jumping on top of each other.
Then after 80 minutes they all jump in a big bath together.
As gay as a box of frogs.
Loosehead, i totally agree with you. Load of w@nkers being over paid.
i think rugby as far more gays than football

a scrum ? whats all that about ?.....line out, where they 'lift' each other with hands between each others legs.

and they are taught 'go low' wen talking about tackle

plus...they have male hookers !! and ive heard it many times that england have a couple of 'soft centres'
With all the money they're getting they should all be gay.
Isnt Will Young supposed to be going out with a footballer?

Footballers do get paid alot yes, but at least they have a talent and there is a lifestyle that comes along with that. They have to stick to a strict regime to make sure they are fit enough to stay at the top of their game, eating properly, training every day, not going out and drinking all the time.

Im not saying that the amount of money they get should make up for this (is probably helps) but Movie stars get paid ridiculous amounts of money for staring in a film. They have a talent too but they dont have to stick to a strict lifestyle to make sure they can do their job to the best of their ability

Plus their career is usually over by 35, they can go into managment etc but Movie stars can carry on acting for a long time, especially the men
