I have a full UK drivers licence, which I obtained in Jan 2002. I want to buy a 50cc Mpoed. My licence, on the back, shows the "p" catergory, which is for moped. But....the DVLA website says: -

"Full car licence holders riding mopedsIf you pass a car driving test after 1 February 2001 - you will be required to undertake a CBT course before riding a moped on the road unless you already hold a full motorcycle or moped licence. If you already hold a full car licence, or passed a car test before 1 February 2001, you are not required to take a CBT course before riding a moped but you are encouraged to do s0". This says to me that I DO NOT HAVE TO, by law, take a CBT TEST.

I called the DVLA to see if this was true and if I DID need, by law to legally ride a moped, a CBT why did I have the P catergory on my licence. They said that you DONT HAVE TO get a CBT, they just ADVISE YOU TO. I was a bit confused about this. SO I called local police station, they said that I DID NEED A CBT. So, I called DVLA back, spoke to someone diffent and gues what...they said I DO NEED A CBT. So who the hell is right?????

This link explains that you must take the CBT course...

DVLA must be full of muppets, don't even know there own rules.
This is from Toureman's link. You do not need to take the course because you are already qualified to ride a moped without L plates. What was that about muppets?

If you have a car licence...
If you obtained your full car licence before 1 February 2001 you are automatically entitled to ride a moped without L-plates (D-plates in Wales).

If you obtained a full car licence after 1 February 2001 you must first complete a CBT course and obtain a DL 196 certificate to validate your entitlement.
I dont see the problem here. You passed in 2002 so surely you have to take the CBT since this is after Feb 1st 2001.

Yes, I passed AFTER Feb 2001, but read it properley: -

"...If you already hold a full car licence, or passed a car test before 1 February 2001, you are not required to take a CBT course before riding a moped but you are encouraged to do so".

I didnt pass before 2001 BUT I DO HAVE A FULL UK LICENCE.
Weird one, i passed my test (car) in 1999, in 2004 i wanted to do my cat A, i enquired about the same thing as it was clear as mud on the DVLA website, i rang the police and they said it was nothing to do with them!! I spoke to a manager at DVLA and she said she was 100% positive i had to sit a CBT!!! Which I did, then at the end of the CBT when he handedover my certificate, they said I shouldnt have done it!!!
Goodluck!!
