On question time yesterday, I heard the phrase "the purpose of prisons is to rehabilitate people"....

5 minutes ago on the news they said that the powers that be want to follow the American idea of giving food vouchers as a reward to people coming off heroin.....

Well, call me wacky, but I thought the purpose of prisons was to punish people....

And GIVE ME FOOD VOUCHERS for never having taken heroin in my life.....!!!!!

Jesus wept!!!!!!

Packardbell got me started and I haven't finished yet.

sooooo annoyed!!! These ar*seholes get incentives whilst I pay more money for less rubbish collections.... and you want to know why I'm disillusioned....???

I am also disillusioned why give ex-drug addicts vouchers whilst depriving people with dementia a drug that will help to slow down their disease or a cancer patient a drug to cure or prolong their lives.

The main reason is that the sick are in the main law- abiding tax payers not petty crooks thieving to pay for their next fix with an army of social workers etc backing them up.

As for prisons these should be a punishment and rehabilitation, remove all TVs, Playstations etc. Each day 8 hours work, half hour for lunch [ sandwiches or salad], I am sure charities etc could find work for them. Evening meal [hot] after 1 hour of compulsary exercise , then 4 hours rehab in the form of literacy and numeracy classes or classes in skills or even OU degrees and confronting the results of their crimes. The remaining time letters to home or radio plays, classical music etc with no freedom of choice as to what they are to listen to .
No goods to be brought in therefore no drugs, either admit dependence and have compulsary treatment or go cold turkey.
Non custodial criminals curfew daily plus 8 hours lessons for non=working offenders, or 2 hours for working, 7 days per week, these can also do the community jobs like litter-picking, graveyard maintenance etc.

As for that woman who finds fault with every prison she visits, sack her.

I can't argue with that, sandbach..!
One of the best / worst prison stories was where a group of waster inmates had successfully sued the HMP service for putting them on cold turkey for their Heroin addiction. They got 500k between them. Did their crime vicitms get anything? I chuffing well doubt it.

Crims should be punished Saudi style. Would cut the crime rate a lot (pardon the pun).
Englishbird, I'm not sure I understand. What's wrong with rehabilitation?

If someone goes into prison a drug-taking danger to the public and comes out a healthy, valuable asset to society able to make a positive contribution to the country, how is that not a good thing?

Sandbach99, hello from a fellow Sandbachian!
Sorry for hijacking the thread, NJOK whereabouts I'm near the council owned golf course.
