Do you 'look' foreign, by any chance? I don't mean that in a nasty way, but if you have, say, an eastern european or asian look, or if you're black or wear islamic dress, then unfortunately there are still people who assume that means you ARE foreign.

It's terrible, I know, and I've never been asked for anything like this for an agency. I guess it's just the state of things today.

Hi saxy-jag no there is no mistake i am english , apparently this is what they have to do nowadays. I just couldn't believe it. Must be the do gooders again running the country.
Yeah i had the same problem, its due to the spongers from abroad im afraid, soon as they get here they plead poverty, and then they get a house good dole money and a pat on the back. Not all from abroad are bad tho.
Well if theres an organisation out there what i can join to get them on a boat let me know.
I think its disgusting that you have to show your identity these days and for our grandparents to stand up and fight for england in ww2 has all gone out the window.
Trouble is alot of the country has gone soft ,labour has sold us out and people still believe their a perfect party, i mean we used to be the leader in manufacturing and education etc .now its all imported crap that dont last a year.

Well i think its new zealand for me as They only let you in if you can Read or write and speak ENGLISH.
"Well i think its new zealand for me as They only let you in if you can Read or write and speak ENGLISH. "

Is this a wind up - does anyone else see the irony?
ENGINEER, you can write but I'm not sure it's in English...

lol I WAS born in the uk was u?
Dunno, were I?
So you object to showing a few documents? And I thought that you would be one of those in favour of Identity Cards in order "to stop all them immeegrents and peedophiles and peeple wot can't speek Engerlish"

When a "liberal leftiy" and "bleeding heart do-gooder" like myself expressed reservations about ID cards and producing documents for everything, I was told;
"If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear"

So get off your ass, grab your passport and get back down the job centre.
ENGINEER - No-one's parents/grandparents went to fight for England. They were fighting to stop the Nazi War Machine. Do you read The Sun newspaper per chance?

Im starting to warm to your posts engineer - are you being serious or are you just playing an Alf Garnett-type character?

I recently got a job working in the music department at my old high school. I had to bring my passport to prove I was a UK citizen despite having left the school 6 years ago and that my details would be on record on the schools archives. I did not mind though - because I have all my important documents and identification ORGANIZED!
Oneeyevic

I've just re-read some of the posts...this is DEFINITELY a wind up. How could it be anything else?

Why is it that people who shout the loudest about their English heritage literally cannot string a sentence together, in English, without some grammatical or spelling mistook?

(I put 'mistook' in there deliberately...bet they didn't spot it).

Do you 'look' foreign, by any chance? I don't mean that in a nasty way"

say_jag...are you kidding????
inej - I assume that you don't want illegal immigrants to work in this country? (please note the word illegal)

If so, how do you propose that potential employers check weather people are entitledf to work or not? A passport / NI card perhaps? Or should all potential employers go on a course on how to recognise illegal immigrnats (something to do with unibrows I think?)
inej, you ask why you had to take your passport and ID with you to prove you are eligable to work.

Well if you have heard John Reid's announcements yesterday (and over the last wek or so) about increased immigration controls you will begin to understand why.

I am afraid by their crass stupidity both the last Conservative government and this Labour government have given this country a major immigration problem.

It used to be quite difficult to get in this country, and travel was more difficult, so immigration into the UK was a gradual steady flow for many years.

Then the Tories removed some border controls, and Labour just basically gave up checking at all, and we have paid the price of probably a million people in this country who have no right to be here.

more to follow
I'd have to agree with Oneeyedvic (probably a first :c) )

I'm not saying you do, but people can't complain about illegal immigration and then complain about having to establish that they've the right to work here.

I do think having to have a passports a bit strong though, not everybody has one

Now I accept every country needs some immigration, but that imigration should be controlled, limited, and perhaps targetted at people with skills to bring to this country.

Much of ours has been none of this. Illegal immigrants, asylum seekers (who are patently lying), criminals, we have got the lot.

The government have put a figure of up to 570,000 illegal immigrants living here, may be more may be less. see here:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4637273 .stm

We do not know who these people are, we have no idea if they are criminals, carrying AIDS, using our Health service, or paying any taxes (probably not).

(If you want some idea of the problems caused by illegal Asylum Seekers search under "Asylum Seeker jailed" in Google and look under News. Some of the crimes will stagger you, such as people smuggling).

Only now, after over 10 years of chaos, are the Labour party starting to do something about it (although I can remember seeing film of people running through the channel tunnel when the Tories were in power).

The problem has become massive and I doubt if it will ever be sorted out.

I dread to think what will happen when these other Eastern European countries join the EU.
Seems to me, inej, that you wan't it both ways (no inuendo intended). This is a post from you:

Hi everyone , don't get me wrong i understand the pressure people are under to check for illegal immigrants.
I just don't know what it is in this country we just don't have any "right's" anymore.
Can't celebrate christmas , can't have hot cross buns , it just seems at the moment people who were born in this country , pay taxes ni etc are treated like second class citizens or visitors.
For an example you go to Turkey and they have prayers at numerous times a day broadcast over a speaker ,they don't stop this in case they offend holidaymakers. In this country we are not allowed to celebrate our heritage.
Rant over x
By the way brachiopod did have a job but was made redundant. But will get my ass to job centre x
We're not allowed to celebrate Christmas or eat hot cross buns.

Nonsense.

Who says?

Last time I checked, I had turkey at Christmas, got drunk and swapped persents at home at work.

Admittedly, I didn't have any hot cross buns at Easter this year because frankly, most are minging.

I had a cheesecake instead.

It's not true that any of these traditional celebrations have been banned. It's just a lot of right wing mouth-breathers trying to stir up anti-immigrant feelings.

They're currently doing rather well at it.
Last time I looked, Christmas started about the middle of September, and carried right on through to January. It gets bigger and bigger every year inej. I had plenty of hot cross buns at Easter as well - they're usually in the bread isle of Tesco. In fact, you could pick some up for lunch today.

Proof of identitly for obtaining work is obviously important. I daresay that there were alternatives to a passport if you don't have one, but what's the big deal? Surely you want to be able to chack that someone is eligible to work before you employ them?
