Bernard and Ann McDonagh, who ordered restaurant meals for themselves and their children and then ran off without paying, have been jailed. Mrs McDonagh was also found guilty of stealing from supermarkets. The judge described her as a "prolific liar".

Modern day Fagins?

Not really. Fagin stayed at home and send the kids out to commit crime. This lot went with the kids to set a bad example.

Scumbags who should be jailed but it appears being a scumbag thief gets you more punishment than being a scumbag child abuser.

//Mrs McDonagh was jailed for 12 months while her husband was jailed for eight months.//

She also shoplifted, resisted arrest, and lied that she was pregnant.

What I don’t understand is that the pair were jailed for 12 and 8 months a year ago:

I’m sure they are both out again now. But is the BBC giving us an annual reminder to save them gathering any fresh news?

maybe they will slim down a bit now 🤣

What hope for the children of these grifters?  And this fat- arsched crook will be on a much-reduced diet for the coming 8 months, though with the present system he'll be out again in short order.

I hope their six children were cared for by relatives or friends, rather than in care at the tax payers expense (I wouldn't wish 'care' on any child).

I don't know why the Beeb has republished this article, there is no real update.

As NJ says it's a year old story, dunno why the BBC thinks it should resurrect it.

Maybe it's some sort of public broadcast announcement now the better weather is here and more people may think about 'dine and dash'.

Rather like those posters we see in supermarket windows - young child crying whilst mummy is taken away by a policeman for shoplifting

Old News: There seems to be an algorithm on the BBC news pages which selects dated "similar stories" to link alongside current items - needless to say, this is frequently hopelessly awry (one reason I don't trust AI).

reading the article, it seems that this particular case featured in a recent police podcast concerning the role played by social media in tackling crime......

NJ, there is a weekly, "Strange But True Crime" podcast on the BBC and this week's is about this family.

I tht cops didn't respond to shoplifting incidents now?

> What hope for the children of these grifters?

Maybe, if they work really hard, they can get a $400 million aircraft one day ...

Dine and dash is a Traveller speciality, especially in areas where there haven't been many Travellers before.  It's happening a lot in the South West and the locals don't immediately recognise them as Travellers because they are not used to them.

Judging from the  husband's bulk he couldn't do much in the way of dashing.

And here's the exact opposite situation - a family awarded £75K over false dine-and-dash allegations by a restaurant:

Peter and Ann McGirr, along with their children Peter Jr and Carol, from County Tyrone launched legal proceedings over a Facebook post by The Horse & Jockey in the Peak District in England in July 2024.

Social media has a lot to answer for ...

it isn't on my BBC news home page, just on the Welsh page; maybe that's where drmorgans saw it. I'd never have seen it otherwise.

Fagin's always depicted as scrawny. At least with these ones you can see where the double pudding portions went.

dine and dash a despicable thing to do, it's people lively hood, i despise theft, and it makes paying customer sometimes look suspicious when they are not out to steal + prices will reflect on every paying customer, just ruins it for everyone.
