I'm sure there's a brilliant plan. Maybe not. Does anyone care at this point. Everyone's backing China on the grounds that ok they're a terrible dictatorship but at least they know what they're doing.

I'm baffled by the whole thing. Tariffs are paid by importers, not exporters. So if a US business wants to import widgets from wherever, they'll have to pay more to do so and offset this by charging the public more to buy them - and in this case the public is the American consumer.

Contrary to Trump's argument, China isn't out to undermine American democracy: the reason they produce so many goods for the US market is that Americans want to buy them.

And now they'll have to pay 150% more (or whatever the current tariff is meant to be) to do so, for popular items like iPhones. This is "Liberation Day"?

I think the logic is that the tariff goes to the tax man, makes the books look good.

And if the Americans can't afford to import they may perhaps purchase goods made in the US.

It all sounds like one of my great plans that I thought would save humanity - but only when I was Manic and a little psychotic.

perhaps it's only in Britain, but people seem to get more agitated over huge price rises than over the government's tax takings. At this rate, Trump may have to ditch his plans for a third term.

It's very simple. Yesterday my coffee cost £3, which meant I had a £3 trade deficit with the coffee shop.

That didn't seem fair so I slapped a 50% tariff on them. Today my coffee cost £4.50.

That'll teach 'em.
