Which would and should be hilarious Hymie. Except that there are eejits walking amongst us that believe him.

They are migrant - we had two million - and they all went back.

I wondered why the Ukes in the land of the free - were so silent...

and also I thought  it might be unlawful uner a presidential order ( court for appeal shd be available somewhere)

Why are people from Ukraine living in the USA? If they are seeking a safe haven (as opposed to "starting a new life") there are plenty of places nearer so that they are on hand to return when circumstances permit and hey are required there.

Many who arrived here since the war began have returned home:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-surrey-68361086

"A fifth of Ukrainians who arrived in Surrey, Kent and Sussex as part of a government visa scheme have returned to their war-torn home, figures reveal."

Of those living here, it seems most of them intend to remain:

https://migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/resources/briefings/ukrainian-migration-to-the-uk/

"Most Ukrainians now plan to stay in the UK long term. In an April 2024 survey, 68% of respondents said they intended to continue living here even after it was safe to return to Ukraine."

This is not what the asylum system is for. It is to provide temporary safe haven for those under threat. If a large number have returned (mainly women and children since they formed the majority of arrivals) the time has come to consider whether or not such safe haven is still necessary.

The abuse of the asylum system, it seems, continues unabated. But not, it seems,  in the USA.

The grandmother in my post 15:23 Thu. has returned at least once to the Ukraine for a visit, paid for by the Germans.

It's not only the UK being shafted.

if they've lived there for long enough and meet the requirements for settlement then why shouldn't they at least be allowed to apply?

Which 'requirements' are you thinking of ?

Question Author

if i remember right the UK has minimum income and language proficiency in order to settle depending on which visa/route you want. i'm sure germany et. al. have similar conditions but i don't know what they are.

"if they've lived there for long enough and meet the requirements for settlement then why shouldn't they at least be allowed to apply?"

I think the question should be "why should they be allowed to apply?"

They were allowed to come here because of the war being waged in their country. I'm not saying it is safe for all of them to return now because I don't know whether it is or not. That said, it does seem as if it can't be all bad bearing in mind that many who arrived here have already returned. As well as that, Daily Mail columnist Jenni Murray hosted a female refugee and her young son and they returned home at least twice during their sojourn here.

So I cannot really accept that it is so dangerous hat vast swathes of the population have o flee for their lives. It may not be very nice, but if it was so hazardous why would a mother with a young child return there simply for a visit?

The point of asylum is to provide temporary sanctuary when remaining exposes refugees to excessive risks to their lives or safety. Once those risks are reduced that temporary sanctuary is no longer required. Asylum is not the opportunity “to start a new life”.  That comes through legal migration which should begin with an application whilst the migrant is still at home in  process similar to the one a UK citizen wishing to settle broad would be subject to. You can’t just pitch up and say “I prefer it here. I think I’ll stay.”

Just to say - thankyou NJ, I always read & appreciate your comments.

The pleasure is mine, dave. Thanks for the compliment.

He's also cut all foreign aid,  with one notable exception.

Many living in the Horn of Africa, enduring famine conditions, will die because of his heartless actions.

I think the question should be "why should they be allowed to apply?"

oh my Gawd- form IK-UK1B - fill out  this form to be able to apply
