Very sad to hear of the death of artist Jack Vetriano at age 73.  Love his work and saw one of his very first exhibitions in Glasgow many moons ago.  His name might not be familiar, but I'm sure you will have seen his work.  Born in Scotland and died in France.

His work was too twee for my liking but I could really appreciate his talent.

Sad news indeed, I like his work.  RIP Jack.

Ah yes! Thought the name rang a bell. Love his paintings too. My cousin has one (print)hanging up in her lounge. Aww, 73 is too young..RIP Jack.

I love hos work and a. So sorry to hear this news.  Am I right in thinking that he felt he wasnt aporeciated by the art establishment .  EspeciaLly in Scotland .?

Rosie, I read an interview with Jack where he felt he wasn't appreciated by the art 'buffs', but he didn't seem to care - he knew many, many other appreciated his works.

Was it something to do with copying from pictures in a book - he admitted it - but then it was a book to help budding artists.

Hazlinny, there may have been that too, but I know the snobbery of the art world irked Jack to a certain extent.

A lot of artists start off copying. Like you said, Haz. It's good for practice.

If you read LiK's link Rosie you will get your answer.  I would certainly have work of his on my wall.

Any artist painting a landscape or portrait is copying, surely.

Thank you for pointing me to that link Ladybirder.  Really interesting and informative.    And many thanks LiK for posting it  x

No, Douglas. Compare Constable, Turner, Lucian Freud, Vincent van Gogh, Picasso, Hokusai, Francis Bacon.....

All very different, but not because some were better at copying than others.

The Dancing Butler has become iconic, but massively over-reproduced. Most of his work seems to be pretty kitsch bordering on soft porn.
