Not quite that bad, but if I was a going to stand outside for anything, it would be to ask SK (or whoever sent this news to the media) how they intend to fund 13,000 police officers and Specials with funds which amount to just £13,846 each.
''We have now increased our total headcount so that at the end of September 2024 we had 2,524 officers, bucking the national trend since many other forces saw their numbers slightly. But, you have to look behind the figures a little too.
“In the 15 years between 2009 and 2024, we have gained just over 50 officers ''
I don't think it's an extra 1300o police for West Mercia police- that would be an increase from 2500 to 15500!
I'd check the details if I were you.
The cost to recruit and train one special constable is around £4200. 'Running costs' are around £1800 per year. Special constables can also claim loss of earnings from their usual job if they have to be on duty during their normal working hours. This happens more often than you might think - attending court or for training.
Special constables are only required to work 166 hours a year (equivalent to 3 hours a week). If a special constable is injured on duty the force must usually pay sick pay for up to 28 weeks and compensation.
So a special constable is not necessarily the bargain bucket police officer some might think
