Consequently they all chose someone to represent their views (although typically the elected candidate prioritises their own views, and the views of their party before the views of their constituency, so the public has minimal effect on policies despite theoretically being those who are meant to be deciding).
The folk who become candidates will likely be those in a position to try; consequently the democratic process gets effectively doped by other influences/systems. That could be, for example, public school folk who have made the contacts to get in on the game, or, as another example, those who have vast reserves of wealth to fund a campaign.
In the end a nation's political system is likely to be a combination of systems and can be a mix of, for the sake of argument, both plutocracy and democracy.
