He isn't going to jail, he's going up in smoke. There is definitely signs that he has had mental health problems over a long period of time, something snapped. He could be another Michael Ryan.

People carry out these acts because they are either mad or bad; sad doesn't generally feature.

Unless he has left some sort of note or manifesto, I doubt that we will ever know why he did what he did.
