... but is he kidding himself?  He's is cosying up to the EU and I fear is on course to sell this country out to them - but since Trump despises the EU and there is no love lost between the two, I believe Starmer is deluding himself if he thinks he can keep a foot  in both camps.

Actually I think staying neutral is the best option.  At the moment.

I agree, YMB, but I fear Starmer doesn't.

I agree, wouldnt trust 2TK to tell me the weather.

But, personally I wold do pretty much what he is doing, talk to the EU and also to the US.  President Trump talks a good game but it has to be remembered it is (as it should be) for the American people not us.  I do believe he does hae a soft spot for the UK given he is half British himself but how far that goes is an unknown.  So yes have good talks to the EU to show Donald we have options.  Of course the difference between Starmer and myself is I would never do it,  I suspect he would.

The FT is reporting that in an effort to deepen economic relations with the EU, Starmer is adopting a policy of ruthless pragmatism and will fight his opponents.

the EU is a much more reliable ally than the USA. Look at what's happened with mexico and canada--the USA had a free trade agreement with them and has torn it up. the USA has also backed out of its agreements on minimum corporation tax and the paris climate accords. it cannot be considered a trustworthy country.

there are basically three games in town--the USA, the EU and China. the USA is by far the worst of these options in my view because it cannot be trusted to stick by its agreements. by comparison the other two are far more reliable.

America is about as trustable a trade partner as Russia is at the moment.

The only reason Trump is saying vaguely nice things about the UK and Starmer at the moment is because they are after the NHS.

He has to try though because that's what we employ him to do. Ie what's best for the country rather that what some Trump lover or EU lover would prefer.
