Ah, NHS Reforms, of course. Why's no-one thought of that before...

It says a lot that he is open to the prospect of the NHS dying!

If "reform" just means throwing a shedload more money at it, it won't work.

Starmer said:

“The NHS is at a fork in the road, and we have a choice about how it should meet these rising demands: raise taxes on working people to meet the ever-higher costs of an ageing population – or reform to secure its future. We know working people can’t afford to pay more, so it’s reform or die.”

So that rules out raising money through tax and therefore throwing money at it.... unless there's another option of raising money from those who don't work like pensioners, inheritance tax, motorists, CGT, wealth tax, savings tax etc

With ever-rising costs, he's going to have to be quick!

Doing something about the huge amount of immigration would be a start

Is this a way for him to justify all the tax increases that are forecast in the October budget.

Question Author

Apparently not, gramps.  He says there's no more money for the NHS without reform, so it appears he'intends to reform it with no financial investment.  Magic!

Try making an appointment with a doctor or a nhs manager.

See which one you manage first!

Are these the people who have spent decades opposing every attempt to reform the NHS and kicked up a hissy fit storm at the mere suggestion of doing so? Pass the sick bag Alice.

Plain and straight talking, well done SK.

I wonder how he is going to carry out these reforms.  Perhaps he will use the Welsh NHS as an example.

Talking is easy, nicebloke. You can't argue with things like 'make better use of technology', ' shift more care from hospitals to communities' and ' move from sickness to prevention'. All sound great, but it's actually doing it, without investing more money, that's the difficult part. There have been Reforms for as long as I can remmeber but the outcomes have always been disappointing.

No doubt it does need a reform, possibly returning to the good practices of yesteryear; but a Labour government threatening it's death ? It's the way they tell 'em.

I'm amazed that Clement Attlee was able to set up the NHS and the Welfare State immediately after WWII yet we seem to be in dire straits these days.  Can't even afford to help our elderly through winter.

Get rid of The Trusts and managers, bring back the Matrons.

Put the training back in the hospitals and out of Universities.

Each hospital used to have its own training school with nurses working on the wards while learning practical skills.

3 months in training school then ward work

Imagine if a conservative prime minister had said that. We would be defended by accusations of privatisation of the NHS.

At least he's got what it takes to say how it is and what needs doing instead of ignoring it. AND, many many posters on here have done nothing but complain about how much money has been thrown at the NHS to no affect, now,  you are complaining that there are no funds forth coming. Joke or what. Get ready for a REAL shake up by  REAL PM.

What has he said needs doing?

A PM who's got to work from day one. Love the hard lines he's taking to shake this country to the core. Its been a long time coming. Great!!

Nicebloke1.  If you think that Starmer is a real PM, I have a property on the north side of the River Thames, which is surrounded by high walls and even has its on guards.  It was bequethed to me by a very distant relation.  If you buy that I will throw in a nice bridge which opens and closes. Make me an offer.
