Just announced he died in the ambush. Could any army be so unlucky to lose 42 in so so short a space of time? surely the Ukrainians are getting some pretty advanced intel. (from the US?)

Simply using a cell phone is now a givaway, a Russian soldier was zapped recently when he used his phone to boast of the destruction he had caused;
'Devices called cell-site simulators, which mimic a phone mast, are stationed inside drones and trucks and sent over the battlefield to pick up the signals of nearby phones.

The simulators trick the phones into measuring and reporting the strength and direction of the signal from several phone masts in the area.

By analysing these responses – whether the signal is stronger or weaker with different masts - it is possible to find out where the phones are likely to be and send in an artillery strike at that spot.

It is also possible that some systems can directly identify the phone's location when the simulators connect to them, for example by accessing the phone's internal GPS system.

Whichever method is employed - and the finer details are closely guarded military secrets - they all end with the enemy obtaining a reasonably accurate location of whoever is using the phone.'
Why are the surviving colonels (and generals) still putin up with their leader?

Khandro; True of false, it'll sow mistrust and discontent in USSR.
If there was any plan of getting rid of Putin I doubt anyone would know about until it happened. I just see all this so called inside information being pie in the sky, along with wishful thinking. But I do hope I'm really wrong.
'so called inside information being pie in the sky, along with wishful thinking'

AKA 'propaganda'
hard to say who that propaganda might be coming from, though. It might be Putin trying to denounce traitors within (especially the man supposedly named to be after his job), the West warning that he's on borrowed time, or the military discussing their plot with the media. I would have thought the last of those the least likely.
Of course it is ZM, first casualty of war is the truth and all that.
Great book by Ben Elton, YMB.
this is the one you want, ZM (bettr go for the Kindle edition at those prices)

According to a senior officer in our military my husband was speaking to, there are no NCOs in the Russian army - no, corporals, sergeants etc - and therefore all orders to troops come directly from high ranking officers. That’s why colonels are on the front lines - and vulnerable.
^incidentally, that’s why there’s no discipline either.
I wonder how many Russian officers are killed by their own men. The Americans have a term for this: fragging.
sure does, ZM. Proper history book.
Goodness knows, sanmac. They seem to be little more than a drunken, undisciplined rabble so I suppose anything is possible.

They do have NCOs but from what I have heard and read they are not encouraged to exercise initiative or think on their feet in the same way as say UK forces NCOs are.
They’re not NCOs in the same way as ours, Edmund. They don’t enforce discipline and orders come from above. I’m not sure what they do really. Peel the spuds perhaps. My husband’s military friend did say though that Russia WILL NOT win this war.
OMG! We're safe, then. Naomi's hubby's mate says that Russia is going to lose the war!
Whoops, I left myself wide open to a long harangue about N's h's m only saying that R wasn't going to win the war, not lose it.
