Hi, I have a vivid memory of a book I took out at the library in the 80s in the U.K. I didn’t want to give it back! I remember taking it out three or four times and remember exactly where it was on the shelf - I could probably point the shelf out now if I went back but I cannot remember the name of the book. It was about a mechanical girl. She had dark wavy hair and the illustration was realistic, not cartoony. The colours were very purple. I think maybe she was given a purple dress by her human friend. Has anyone got any idea what this was? I don’t even remember the story other than it was kind of dark and sad, not silly like kids’ books now.

Was it a picture book, or more like a novel with illustrations?

Hi Mozz71 it was a story book, text heavy but it had some illustration. It’s the cover I remember mostly, the robot like illustration, purple dress I think and the wavy dark hair. I think the mechanical girl wanted to be human and was sad she wasn’t like her human friend.

I thought about the Malorie Blackman one too Rowan, but she wasn't around in the 80s. I'll keep hunting.
