In the past when the question of changing sex was discussed on AB, occasionally a comment was made about wanting to identify as a dog or another animal, and it was scoffed at.

Well scoff no more.

"'Catgender' is described on the web page as "[feeling] an extremely strong connection to cats or other felines, either strongly identifying with them or simply wanting to incorporate them into their gender to better understand their identity"."

On a scale on 1 to 10, how utterly absurd is this?

It's off the scale. I'm convinced our universities have gone potty.
Once again the unfortunate interface of large intelligence without enough day-to-day day responsibilities to occupy it = the student.

And this is what that combination can do.
In years to come I may identify as a smelly cat lady but this catgender thing is a bit weird.
//large intelligence //

I would dispute that.

If my children were still in education the last place I would advise them to go is a university.
***.
It's not confined to universities. I convinced the whole of the human race is slowly but surely going round the bend.
The filter bars me from using a common name for cats to describe this latest garbage from Bizarroworld.

There are surely going to be quite a few tearful, frustrated wee loons about the place as reality kicks in. No more pandering to this crap.
All a bit silly.
Still, reading this thread I can't help feeling it's like overhearing David Brent and "Finchie" at full throttle :-)
It's a catsasstrophy :-(
Only just spotted this Dd. I posted someting on a different thread a few moments ago it is here ...
//Then Bristol Uni. insisting that there needs to be more help for people who self identify as cats(I know), going as far as to recommend a number of pronouns to be used when addressing them. Here puss, puss, is not on the list. No advice as yet concerning the correct way to deal with, and dispose of the cat litter.//

Wouldn't mind being at the lecture mind, when the ones who self identify as Dogs turn up. RRRoughh, Meeeoww.

i suspect a degree of tongue poked in cheek cavity with this........
Yes, maybe some are taking the puss
It must be like negotiating a minefield to make any kind of speech at these places. Saying anything that makes any kind of reference to other people is fraught with danger.
Not exactly dangerous, if someone declares their chosen pronoun it's OK by me.
Great, someone identifies as a cat, takes part in a major sporting event, runs 10 yards then flops down in a patch of sun for a belly rub
^^^Haha, Rowan ;o)
Radio Rental!
//Here puss, puss// lol, Togo!
I was thinking similar Rowan. Can't wait to see them doing the hurdles on their hands and knees, throwing up a furball in the middle of the track and hissing at each other.
