I think we need a new crime on the books to cover cases like this, ok she's still alive so it's not murder but to all intents and purposes life has been removed. Damn savage should never see the light of day again.

and he'll be out in 3.5......
beggars belief - no justice
No doubt the CPS prosecuted him on the highest charge they thought would bring a guilty verdict. So, yes, i agree with you TTT. New crimes need to be added to our laws and sentences set accordingly. Wonder what the charge would have been had she died?
There is already a crime that covers that - attempted murder which can carry a life sentence in some circumstances but the sentencing guidelines are a prison sentence between 3 and 40 years.
The facts of the case didn't fit the requirements, he wasn't even charged with GBH
Ken, the sentence would have been no different if she had died.
As I understand it the maximum term for Kidnapping or False Imprisonment is life.

As this case has involved the woman effectively loosing her life this piece of scum should never see the light of day. The problem is an out of touch right-on liberal judiciary.
6 months to 12 years maximum for kidnap of an adult; 12 months to 12 years for false imprisonment
// but to all intents and purposes life has been removed. //

chrissakes - if you stick your fingers in an electric socket and get killed (I know you wont) - to all intents and purposes your life has been removed - but your wee wifey ( widow that is!) can't sue the electricity board (*)

(*) can but wont recover, andy-giuffre type suit

er and so - someone near someone who dies is not enough for murder or even manslaughter
keep taking the tablets PP (or maybe get some new ones!)
Barry i said 'charge' not sentence. And how would 'attempted murder' cover what happened? How would the prosecution prove beyond reasonable doubt that the boyfriend intended to kill the poor lass? Involuntary manslaughter, at a push.
Ken, I was replying to the OP where murder is mentioned
And the charges would have been no different had she died

barry, I'm not talking about the current law I'm talking about what it should be.
I agree, ttt. Although 7.5 years is longer than many other kinds of assaults. Perhaps the whole sentencing system needs to be changed.
Why can't a judge sentence a person to a full term of imprisonment instead of this farcical situation whereby half of the sentence is served?
We seem to only worry about 'outcome'. But, to me, intention is worse, than a criminal being "lucky".
You get more for murder, than attempted murder, but why?
Danny, because they have to still be watched when released. They don't word it very clearly though.
He added: "I can only hope that in time her family can find some comfort knowing justice has been done."

DCI Harward may yet find he's wide of the mark on this one.
// keep taking the tablets PP (or maybe get some new ones!)//
o gawd the one line smiths are hard at work

if you arelooking fo evil intent in kidnaping being used for evil intent in causing death ( or deff to you proles)
then you are looking at the doctrine of transferred malice

"The doctrine of transferred malice applies where the mens rea of one offence can be transferred to another. For example, suppose A shoots at B intending to kill B, but misses and hits and kills C. Transferred malice can operate so that the mens rea of A (intention to kill B) can be transferred to the killing of C."
