We must make ourselves less attractive to stop the flow of people risking their lives to get here

*agree*
It is not economically more attractive than any other country in europe

It is beneficially more attractive
that will be easier for some people than others :o))
Question Author
Sticky, we are the proverbial soft touch here, we all can accept that therefore we need to stop giving hand outs and putting the illegals up in hotels , they never appear to get sent back?
What about our own homeless people? we should be giving them the warmth of a hotel room and hot meals before pandering to those that think we have a land of milk and honey here
//they never appear to get sent back// Don't forget out a grand total 25,000 in, five were sent back this year, So the government are really pulling out all the stops
Some asylum seekers prefer Britain because a) they speak English. b) they have extended family here.
Question Author
Not 25,000^^^
It is beneficially more attractive

it is not. The country with the best benefits in Europe is France. Britain is below average. And you want to make it worse? Cutting off your nose to spite your face there

So jno , the same old question would be why don’t they ( or at least some) make their asylum request to France?
When the UK eventually becomes worse than where they come from they will stop coming! May take a few decades.
Question Author
Personally I would hate that happen but they can’t all pike here because they speak our language or we ‘owe’ them as jno has said , by us invading their countries, we are a tiny island , it’s just not viable

Bobbi, see anne's answer.

Those who come from French-speaking countries (like Algeria, say) do indeed stop in France. Those who come from countries where they've learnt to speak English try to get to Britain. That's what I would do too. Anyone has a much better chance of getting work in a country where they speak the language.
“ SOME “
Question Author
Sorry jno, I simply don’t think that’s the answer, we are too small an island to embrace all those that try to get here illegally , beating in mind Iraq is no longer a war zone , Albania isn’t either nor any of the African countries, the ones I’d say should be here are the many who helped British troops in Afghanistan as interpreter etc, the rest are basically economic migrants!
They migrants want to be here because they speak English, not French. Should we change to another language to deter them?

The other reason is because there are already people here that they know - family, friends and they want to be with them.
Question Author
AA, if you’re all for them coming here illegally might I suggest Scotland take their share instead of people on our south coast seeing it on a daily basis?
//Some asylum seekers prefer Britain because a) they speak English. b) they have extended family here. //

These are not, in the main, genuine asylum seekers. They're economic migrants - and I agree. We do have to make this country a less attractive proposition. Nothing offered on arrival would be a start. They're in tents in France and the French don't seem to mind that at all.
Tut tut tut, don’t put words in my mouth Bobbie .
I've never seen you object to them coming here, anneasquith. Perhaps you would be kind enough to clarify your thinking - just to avoid any confusion that may have arisen from your previous posts.
