One rule for the plebs, one for MPs.

Tory MP Andrew Rosindell backed the £20 cut in Universal Credit but says many MPs need a second job to maintain their lifestyle. What a bloody hypocrite.

give me MPs who want to be there as MPs... not MPs who are there to trouser a few hundred thou for "consultancy" and buy a nice villa.
// the best MPs are people with integrity, judgement, and principle... those things are more important than experience running a small business...//

obviously, you don't run a business lol! All those attributes are required to run a successful business.

// Somebody who is motivated to serve the public as an MP - to take their seat in parliament and participate in history - will do so if it means earning 83k (which is still quite a high salary).//

That's rather glamourising both the job and the motivation for becoming an MP - and why would all the above admirable qualities, prevent someone from doing a few hours consultancy work on top?

"All those attributes are required to run a successful business. "

not necessarily unfortunately... Philip Green, Donald Trump, Rupert Murdoch... not "small" businessmen I agree but all did pretty well without much integrity or principle... (maybe a spot of good judgement here and there)
Why do you think you’re a pleb, canary?
"why would all the above admirable qualities, prevent someone from doing a few hours consultancy work on top?"

because what they call "consultancy" is nothing of the sort. it's a smokescreen for currying influence and doing favours for people.
^^^^^^^^^^^ sweeping generalisation. There are plenty of doctors and solicitors/barristers that are MP's and do consultancy work. They have to , to maintain their license
There's not a single word APG has said on this thread that I disagree with.

I simply don't understand the self-important harrumphing that goes on when the question of MP's pay, or the amount they earn from second jobs, arises.

Cox is an incredibly clever QC, he's served his constituents well (we assume otherwise why would they keep on returning him) so why the hell shouldn't he earn money from his undoubted skill?

It seems to me some people will only be satisfied if all MPs do is MP'ing - that's just daft.

Personally I think MPs as a rule are underpaid (of course there's exceptions that prove the rule, Raynor being a good example, plus of course Corbyn and Abbott, all three would never survive in a commercial setting because uselessness/mediocrity is soon discovered) and therefore given the undoubted intelligence of many of them, and the undoubted success they have achieved outwith being an MP, bloody good luck to them if they can earn on this side.

Cue the obligatory nurses pay comment....
"It seems to me some people will only be satisfied if all MPs do is MP'ing - that's just daft"

Why? if you are in power then you should only have one paymaster... at the moment you can take your seat in the commons and then get ten times that salary from bit of "consultancy" with a company that hires you purely because of your connections... it is quite naive to say that people hire powerful and connected people on merit... they hire them because they are powerful and connected!

wouldn't be against raising their salaries either...
"ll three would never survive in a commercial setting because uselessness/mediocrity is soon discovered)"

It is quite common to see useless or mediocre people promoted especially in large companies unfortunately... i think your view of the "commercial world" is a bit rose-tinted!!
as pointed out it wasn't a cut to UC, but a stopgap for a time, now that's over people will have no choice but to manage. If they can't then perhaps a job might be the way to go.
i am not a pleb by the way... if you consider yourself one, then fine.
