Everyone recognises a Zebra crossing as a safe place to cross the road, but Camden Council has decided to celebrate Transgender Awareness Week by painting this one in bright colours. If I came across it I would assume it's a bit of artwork so I wonder what would happen if a driver didn't recognise it as an official crossing and ran someone over?

Whoever came up with this potty - and dangerous - idea needs their bumps felt.

i live in Camden and have seen them around, i too wondered what they were for. There is one large one by Tottenham court road, it doesn't look like a zebra crossing, though at least there are traffic lights there, another sop to a minority.......
that's on my street....
what a firkin travesty. a total waste of money.

I didn't realise you came under Camden, emmie.
Camden is a dumping ground, for the worlds detritus.
There has been one in Herne Hill since 2019. Don't know how many have been run over on it though.
yes, that long streak of nonsense is on my street.
You'll know how many have been run over on it, then, Emmie?
no idea Ken, and quite frankly i am more concerned about the twerps who ride on pavements, which is for pedestrians, of which there are many. I hate the e bikes, e scooters, they are another sop to a minority and people are going to get killed using them.
They've been in Twickenham and Richmond for ages. They are at pedestrian crossings with lights, not zebra crossings (in this case, anyway)
Those rainbow crossings do not comply with regulations. It is laid down that the road surface is marked with black and white stripes.

Scroll down to road markings.
Camden is a racist council - its leader a bloody buffoon who is prejudiced against the indigenous population, we are indeed the dumping ground for the world's worst. And quite frankly it matters not a jot how one vote as it's a left leaning council and has been for many many years.
danny - they are not zebra crossings, they are at signalised crossings.
237, I would think that the type of road markings applies to all pedestrian crossings.
Transgender awareness week? How can we all not already be aware? It's rammed down our throats every day by the media.
It presumably is not meant to be a zebra crossing though.
As a driver, you always need to be alert to pedestrians crossing, and provided (provided) they are placed at junctions where traffic is not meant to be speeding, then I don't see the problem.
I see motorists ignore official crossings all the time. But I think most people if they see something that "looks" like a crossing, would slow down or give way to someone on it! Which of course should be done even if there is no crossing :-)
. There is large strip of amber across one of the roads in our town centre, which looks like a crossing but is not. I often wondered if that might be dangerous, but as long as everyone is sensible then it's not an issue. The same applies to official zebra crossings, with beacons.

Whatever type of crossing it is, it should be easily recognisable as a crossing.
You need to be careful in some countries which have what look like our zebra crossings, but are just approved crossings for pedestrians which are only for use if the coast is clear, or are themselves controlled by lights like pelican crossings.
According to legislation.org.uk, pedestrian crossings should be marked black and white stripes. These are being called transcrossings, a word not used in the rules regarding pedestrian crossings. Painting them other colours renders them useless as a safe and legal crossing.
