Owen Patterson ,after speaking with his family,has resigned as an MP and will therefore trigger a by-election.After the last couple of days I don’t think he had much option.

Ironically perhaps if the cabinet had not made such a pig's ear of things and allowed everyone to vote simply on a suspension, the huge opprobrium and scandal they have thereby heaped on themselves, and which has inevitably tainted Mr Paterson even more, would not have happened. He could have done his suspension, the constituents could have had their say, and perhaps he could have had a proper chance to clear his name tho I'm bound to say given what I have read, it would I think have been a case of "good luck with that"

I think that's right, ichkeria: Patterson's largely a victim of Boris's meat-headed repsonse - "Just sit tight there, I'll change the law retroactively so you won't be punished." It's surprising how a PM who sees himself as a man of the people can misread the public mood so drastically (as also in the matter of visits to the optician).

Good for him. At least he didn't commit suicide as a result of the witch hunt like his poor wife. The remainiac jackels have effected a somewhat pyrrhic win and the noise now stops. Perhaps the tables can now be turned and we begin to look at the EUSSR sponsored remainiacs and their paymasters. Think I would start with treason May. Remember what a dreadful orator she was, particularly when she was supposed to be speaking in our best interest? This year she has been in reciept of about £1.5, for mostly online gigs, on the talk circuit scam. She has also stuffed her drawers with roughly the same amount from last years "engagements". Her witty repartee must have improved immensely. Incidently this dosh gets dropped for May just about every month and seems to herald mostly from Salt Lake City or Washington. America the home of graft has a monopoly then. I wonder if this money gets to America via Swiss or Cayman Island sources and gets to those places from French Fishing or German car makers. You could hardly put those sources on your Parliamentry Declarations could you. Follow the money.

Take note. 3 out of ten of the above posters on this thread are not resident in the UK, and one is sure to go back home, judging by the disappointment in the UK constantly expressed on this site. Which I suppose is some sort of result.
