A referendum could bring a surprising unexpected result just like the last one.
.....Who knows....
Question Author
It would be nice to look into the Future and see if a positive result would make people think twice and bring the crime rate down .

Even a ten year sentence just for carrying a knife, would be a deterrent ?
No.
Naomi If it wasn't for 'Pointless Questions' as you put it, AB would fold PDQ

Your pretty 'pointless question' yesterday curried over 200 answers
We have strict laws on carrying knives, but they are not police rigorously.

It's my opinion, apg. A referendum on the return of the death penalty will never happen.

Cheers Naomi, you saved me having to type that^ :)
You're welcome.

Gromit 11.08 is that No! ....to carrying a knife,.... or No to a referendum ?
I also agree with Naomi, it will never happen.
Definately NOT
One hanging judge, 1 crooked policeman (OK,almost impossible to imagine) and 1 innocent man (or woman) murdered by the state - or WE the people who voted for it
Naomi //It's my opinion, apg. A referendum on the return of the death penalty will never happen.//

Then the question was not pointless then was it? The simple answer would have been , in your case, 'No'.
Googy things have moved on since 'innocent' men got hanged. Someone who walks into a room, knifes a man to death while shouting Alla Akhbar, and then admits to the murder will never be innocent.
apg, my post doesn't meet your requirements. What can I say? Tough.
Tora speaking sense - //Personally I'd settle for life meaning life.//

100% agree. I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to the death sentence being reintroduced for the absolute worst crimes (it would never be hanging, lethal injection more likely), but I'd be far happier with Tora's idea.
"Someone who walks into a room, knifes a man to death while shouting Alla Akhbar, and then admits to the murder will never be innocent."

If diminished responsibility were proven, it would be manslaughter rather than murder.
I think referenda are not good. The public mood can change in a short time, and a referendum only reflects the current mood. We should proceed more slowly and carefully, giving time for proper honest and open discussion of all aspects and consequences. The public is not good at this. We have elected politicians and I think they should make important decisions which have long-term consequences.

naomi if the Original Question doesn't meet your requirements. What can I say? Tough.
