You can't force people into doing jobs they don't want to do...in this country, that is.
I think the answer is in your question - "workshy".
Question Author
Gingerbee, in that case they should look at stopping their benefits, you did notice I said workshy ? And not those that are genuinely needy of benefits
...and who decides who is "workshy" and who isn't...and who needs any benefits and who doesn't?
There was a long thread about this a couple of days ago.

So are you saying our benefit systems not flawed?
I don’t know who says who’s workshy and who isn’t and not even sure what Thad answer is , I only know those that are fit enough to work, should!
Question Author
Sorry Barry, I missed it, I think

Looks like it was exhausted then, so maybe a Mod can remove this one?
I agree with you...but if you force somebody into a job that they really don't want (for whatever reason), they'll simply do it so badly that they'll get themselves the sack.
Question Author
Ginger I know there’s no easy fix and I’m with you there but the lazy among us should be weeded out to earn instead of take
// they'll get themselves the sack. //

And cannot claim any benefits for 13 weeks. So no one deliberately gets the sack.
I saw a man on benefits being interviewed who said he doesn’t work because he likes to spend his time with his young son. I’ll stick my head above the parapet and say he’s workshy.

I agree with Bobbi. The able should be made to work for their benefits. That might encourage them to get a proper job where they would earn more than they get in handouts.
There is a huge skills shortage.
So there are 100,000 HGV vacancies, but not 100,000 people with the relevant qualifications to drive.
Question Author
Gromit , yes a large percentage is in retail probably for the time of year I suspect
People can't just walk in to a lorry driver's job, or become a butcher overnight - this country is very short of both of those.
Who would want to be cared for by someone who is only doing because they have no choice and have been forced to? Not me.
Question Author
There’s more vacancies than those you’ve mentioned Barry
Well I didn't want to write a long list, Bobbi.
Not much skill needed to pick up rubbish or clean graffiti, barry,

Who would be responsible for identifying the workshy?

What criteria would they have to meet in order to fill current vacancies. Also would you take away the ability of firms to employ the best people for the job in question and instead devolve responsibility to the DWP?

Would you take geographical location and skillset into consideration? There may be jobs aplenty for C++ developers in Bristol but that won't mean much to Val who's just been made redundant from her job as an accountant in Carlisle.
Question Author
No Barry but you chose skilled workers
