Wow, it's a good thing that the university is no located in Manitoba!
"Surely this is a wind up or is it?" No it isn't, in my opinion.
Take "manmade" for a start. Many women have pioneered some great discoveries, achievements and inventions over the ages, why should it be "PC gone mad" to dismiss this?
I wonder if for example Marie Curie would be happy to know that her discovery of radiation would be generalised as "man made" when she was a woman.
Then again, this is just the usual anger provoking b******t the DM thrives off with its ageing following.
Who uses the term "PC" these days, other than dinosaurs?
Sorry mate but times have moved on and these are old expressions that are now considered ....Just. Plain. Wrong.
(BTW I am late 50s)
i know many who aren't ageing who read the Mail, why is it always denigrated by those who don't read it. As to manmade surely there is nothing to replace it with, womanmade, personmade, its bonkers.
what would you replace manhole cover with for example, the idea that you can keep on changing terms that we have known for centuries overnight is just stupid. what about blackmail, does that do a disservice to the black community, no of course not.

\\Take "manmade" for a start. // mean it was made by a person.

So what about..
RoMAN
MANchester
woMAN
huMAN
Granted most of us are somewhat "human".
Maybe a minority would prefer to be "huwoman"
quite happy the way things are,
More silliness. It hasn’t occurred to them
that ‘man made’ means made by humans. They need to take up a hobby. Anything to occupy the empty space in their brains.
a step too far Naomi, what brains........
Derrrr ….. I didn’t think of that, emmie. :o)
a lot of people with too much time on their hands...
Hi Emmie,
re "why is it always denigrated by those who don't read it"
Probably because of glaring headlines on the front cover, usually to do with immigration. I personally flick through a copy now and then, with an open mind only to be confronted by the same anger inducing fact twisting content each time.
There are non-ridiculous alternatives for gender biased terms.
eg. for manhole (euch!) how about "inspection hatch"?
Fireman/firefighter etc.
Webbo: Ro-person, Personchester, hu-person ;-)
As for "woman", I've heard it said that it comes from "man with a womb"!
Apologies for the ageism.
Emmie // what would you replace manhole cover with for example//
maintenance hole cover

Manmade...........Fabricated
Google // I wonder if for example Marie Curie would be happy to know that her discovery of radiation would be generalised as "man made" //

Radiation is not man made, or in fact fabricated. Its a natural phenomenon
Obviously. I was referring to her discovery of it being referred to as "man made". The expression isn't always made in reference to an object, for example, wars are "man made" phenomena.
I've never heard of scientific discovery being described as man made.
it's all entertainment outrage, should be more concerned with rise of gas prices, nah let them freeze in outrage over manmade.
Radiation is not man made, or in fact fabricated. Its a natural phenomenon
altho in the telly prog
Irene ( who had a difficult relationship wivver ma ) irradiated god-know-what, and then found there was a burst of intense radioat=ctivity a little after stopping the irradiation - artifically induced radiation - - -

wiki: Jointly with her husband, Joliot-Curie was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935 for their discovery of artificial radioactivity, making them the second ever married couple (after her parents) to win the Nobel Prize, while adding to the Curie family legacy of five Nobel Prizes.
jesus bright family - presumably they all died from radiation poisoning. Marie used to carry around 1 mg radium - wow
and mum said - - ah seenk - -I think there is another prize in that
Peter The Radiation may have been artificially induced, but it occurs naturally in every living thing.
...I'll get me geiger counter!
This is click bait, guaranteed to ensure the sort of reaction this thread has produced

What the university is actually saying, is that it encourages its students to look for alternative words and phrases in order to avoid using inflammatory language.

Which is absolutely fair enough.

It is not coming on like Woke United, damming everyone for eternity for saying the wrong thing.

There is a deliberately skewed click bait way of interpreting what is actually going on here, or there is the rational explanation which too many people will not actually read, because their desire to be irrationally offended by something that does not involve them, has had a jolt up its terminals.
