ah, it's the wicked British public who have brought this on themselves. If only they'd just believe everything the government says and do what they're told!

Anyway, it had better be temporary. The competition laws are supposed to protect the public by stopping oil companies acting together to raise prices.
It makes sense at the moment to work together on the logistics of delivery.
The BBC news story covering this suggests the government may bring in the army to deliver fuel.

I’m old enough to remember the driver strike of circa 2000, where the government of the day proposed the same thing – until it was pointed out that the HGV fuel delivery drivers had been made owner/operators (of their vehicles) to maximise profits for the fuel suppliers.
So unless the government are going to commandeer the fuel delivery vehicles from their individual owners, the army will be delivering the fuel in Jerry cans.

I thought the army idea had been kicked into touch as army drivers don't have the necessary qualifications to drive fuel tankers.
