Have just heard on the news on the radio that they are trying to make it illegal for a man to wolf whistle at a woman!! Apparently its ‘against a woman’s human rights’. Don’t think I’ve ever heard anything so stupid in my life! I would blush and take it as a compliment. Your thoughts??

I long for the old days when I used to get a wolf whistle! I would say however it depends on the circumstance. A one off whistle is a compliment - a whistle accompanied by bawdy comments is unpleasant and mildly threatening.
I used to love it when I got wolf-whistled. That was a 'few' years ago though. I took it as a compliment.
be hard to prove in court wouldn't it? he could claim to be a twitcher
My mum tells the story of how each time she walked a certain route she was whistle at. She was thrilled because she was heavily pregnant with me and also pushing my eldest brother in a pram. One day she looked up towards to window it came from and it was a parrot!!!
This may be useful for the general mood.
They should try enforcing the laws they have.

Just asked my daughter(bit if an exhibitionist if I'm honest) and she was not happy. She revels in attention still, even being pregnant and another baby in tow. I cant write on here exactly what she said but it was basically around ugly women not getting them.
We've had this discussion fairly recently a few times. Personally, I don't give a monkeys. A stranger's reaction is neither a compliment or an insult- but I can see the issue.
Wolf-whistlers neither know or care, how a recipient might feel. It's nothing personal, entirely about them.
The problem is, that doing it to a group of young women at a shopping centre, say, seems entirely harmless and slightly brainless... but to someone walking on her own, in the dark, it could seem more intimidating. I think it's the lack of care or consent that's the problem in general.
Usual extremists sabotaging well-intended initiatives. No sense of proportion.
I'm not sure what you meant by that Canary. Care to explain?
I've always thought if the girls want to wolf whistle at me let em, they're only human!
This whole strategy is not just about 'wolf whistles' - it's much more in depth than that.

By concentrating on one potentially trivial strand it's easy to lose sight of the whole issue.

I'm not sure, ttt, that women always feel equally safe. Ymb, I don't think I have ever, ever heard a woman complaining that she "didn't" get wolf-whistled at!
Thanks mamya, I think that probably is the general idea- mindsets, rather than just a wolf-whistle.
sadly, walking my dog in my captain Mainwaring khaki shorts has produced nary a whistle . . .
My wife when she was out with my daughter for one! My wife found it very difficult finding attention transferred to her tall blonde haired model like daughter who gets attention when wearing 'sloppy joes' and no makeup.

But it wasnt me who said it remember.

The people who come up with notions like this remind me of Dementors … you know, the creatures in the Harry Potter books who suck every shred of happiness out of people. They won’t be content until we’re all as miserable and as sour and as po-faced as they are.

Yes, but by adding the wolf whistle bit they undermine the good bits because without doubt that is what gets the attention and clicks on News sites.
Fair enough, ymb! Your job to make her feel attractive, rather than strangers, though?
