Given all the controversy over the transgender issue and whether or not men who self-identify as women should be allowed to use women’s facilities, should we establish an accepted third gender as I believe some other countries have, and allocate those people separate spaces?

Sounds a fair and safe compromise to me.
Would it be standing up or sitting down?
We should call it a third sex though. Not technically right, I know- but better than adding more confusion.
No just rearrange the options to lid up and lid down..... it will reduce so many arguments
No.
We have XX and XY chromosomes which give us a clear differentiation of sex and I can see nothing wrong in that.
Yes, there are abnormalities of the sex chromosomes but these lead to medical conditions.
No.
How long before a 4th "Gender" want their own Khazi? ....and so on?
A coincidence that you should raise that today, as only yesterday I used a public toilet facility where a notice informed me that "These toilets are cleaned by Male and Female staff". I immediately thought of all the gender-related discussions on Ab, and wondered if the notice should be amended to include all the modern versions of "gender".
no, No, NO !!!
I think we would need to identify what exactly is the problem. If its just facilities then yes no problem have mens/ladies/anyone changing rooms/bogs but when it comes down to sports and things then its a different problem that I'm not sure you could solve like that.

One thing I have wondered: All we ever hear about is the problems with transitioning men to women wanting to use the womans facilities, I have never seen any issues the other way round. Is there a problem but its never reported or do transitioning women not want to use the stinking mens bogs?

Easy: Men Women Anyone.
There are many Unisex public toilets now.
A third gender - "other"?

hole-E or Holyyyyyy (whichever suits you best)

The problem is the woman who want to be men and the men who want to be woman don't want to be "other" they want to be man or woman...

creating a third category for these people is the problem they want to be seen as male or female not / third / other

youd think thatd be obvious
There are Canary but most of the ones I have come across that is the only option. My suggestion is you simply have three, men women Anyone(unisex) so there is a choice and no one can complain.

Yes but there has to be compromise since allowing people with dangly bits into a womens facility (where children could also be present) could present problems from perverts.

So there has to be compromise on both sides, the minority have to accept that they cannot overrule the majority but at the same time they should be catered for.

I read this morning that nineteen out of twenty women object to trans people using their toilets and other facilities. That combined with a recent discussion here about women prisoners being attacked by trans people who have been put into women’s prisons, and conversely trans people being attacked when put into men’s prisons, to me, creates a dilemma. It is imperative that we, as a society, have a duty of care. We need to ensure to the best of our ability that everyone is safe - hence my question. How can we best achieve that?
In the specific context of prisons, the answer cannot be (or cannot merely be) to create more segregation by sex or gender, because the other factor that was overlooked in the post is that most of the sexual assaults in prisons involve women attacking other women or men attacking other men. That suggests that better supervision and more resources are needed across the board.

They never asked my girlfriend how she feels. Shame. Maybe the people they're asking aren't diverse enough. Age, race, location etc..
Canary, sexes are only male or female. It's "gender" that causes confusion. You know how sex- ual reproduction works. That isn't the controversial part.
Jim, women attacking other women and vv. Is obviously, because they usually only have access to their own sex. In the real world over 90% of attacks, are male on female.
And 98.5% of sexual attacks.
The main thing would be, to stop men attacking their own, because they "appear" different and accept them where they are allowed.
Women have had to fight for their own safety and spaces. And, unfortunately, men also need to do that now. The answer is not to invade the space of more vulnerable people. But to stop men policing each other's "masculinity".
