I read an article John Cena appoligized for calling Taiwan a country can someone explain that

At the end of the Chinese civil war, the government of China retreated to Taiwan, which they call the Republic of China. The communist regime in the Chinese Republic refuse to recognise Taiwan as a separate country. Hence Cena apologising to his Chinese fans.
