This was on the news this morning. I don't understand why. All the elderly and vulnerable have had the vaccine that prevents serious illness even if they do get infected, the young don't suffer from it, so what is the problem? I find it very frustrating that nobody seems to question this.

I couldn't agree more - as long as very few people are dying from it, what does it matter? There have been bad 'flu epidemics - but, again, as long as most vulnerable people have been vaccinated and so are unlikely to clog up hospitals and die, it hasn't mattered. This whole thing has now become a ridiculous over-reaction. ' Save the NHS' was the call - OK, it's been...

Ridiculous to speculate or spout off until they have had their meeting today, has he not learned from the past 12 months?
yes he has unlike some who seem unwilling to see that the economy and people need to get moving again. The SA Variant hasn't caused any lasting damage according to the news the other evening, so perhaps this will be the same.
//The wealthy of any age won't be sitting about with nowhere to go!!//

Well I'm reasonably wealthy (certainly comfortably off so that I can do near enough anything I would reasonably want to do) and my income has not been affected by the pandemic. But, whilst I'm not exactly sitting about, I don't have too many places to go or to spend my money on.

All the hospitality outlets I would normally use are closed (I'm not one for sitting outside in the rain); I cannot go on holiday anywhere; trips within the UK are somewhat pointless because (a) I couldn't stay overnight anywhere and (b) there is nowhere for me to eat and drink when I get there. Personally I cannot wait to resume my normal activities which will include visits to the pub, to restaurants, visits to friends and relatives within the UK and holidays both here and abroad. I've been double jabbed and so I'll take my chances against the virus (as I do with many other infectious diseases). As I've often said, living - for me and most people I know - is more than simply remaining alive, venturing outside only to scurry about masked up solely for essential purposes. But I've no objection to anybody who wants to continue in that vein.
The Indian variant is being carefully watched amid concerns over its spread in the UK, scientists say
The government is "anxious" about the variant and "ruling nothing out" in response, Prime Minister Boris Johnson says
Hospitals in the UK are facing a huge backlog, putting lives at risk, patient groups and staff are warning
Then you should have also seen on the news that the economy is moving upwards more than they expected.
it is, but its early days. the spike is presumably after the march 31st easing of lockdown, where people went a little bit crazy perhaps spending money that has built up over the last 13 months.
Apc at 11:05 thanks Apc, stand by what I said 100%.
I've only one question regarding the Indian Variant:
How many of the people that have caught it here in the UK, were fully vaccinated, as in they had their last jab at least 3 weeks ago??
you dont uderstand covid
you are right

we have to wait and see what the Indian covariant does to the english population ( real life into) and then it will be much clearer

I cant get polio as I have been vaccinated but I can give it to ittle kiddies and paralyse them when I am on holiday
is not an argument I subscribe to
but hey it is free speech day on AB
// How many of the people that have caught it here in the UK, were fully vaccinated, as in they had their last jab at least 3 weeks ago??//

the data is out there somewhere

total N is 500 ( indian covid) and it not surprisingly it is in the flit flat indian populations - bradford, burnely
and 500 is probably too small to decide anything on
//Why is it that some daft people//

If you have to insult someone instead of put a valid point .....

As long as there are few hospitalisations and deaths then the number of infections is irrelevant but you wouldn't think so listening to the BBC news.

This whole thing has now become a ridiculous over-reaction. ' Save the NHS' was the call - OK, it's been saved (although I have my reservations about how it works). Some people will have a couple of weeks of being poorly. This is not a reason for not getting back to normal as fast as possible.
// ...... few ...and deaths then the number of infections is irrelevant but ..... listening to the BBC news rots your brain//

beeb havent covered themselves in gloire BUT it is probably ignorance. So bad I am not sure if they know what a virus is.
but in general - many infections - bad and fewer inrection much better.

if Indian covid is more dangerous that saying no of infections is irrelevant is a bit - - ABish to be honest.
so far it seems
a. the indian covariant up t north is still causing scientists to go eek!
b. there are local outbreaks up to 200 per 100 000 in northern areas which are classically locally indian ( as in asian indian)
c.the people getting it are unvaccinated
d. get vaccinated and you wont get covid and DDDDDIIIIIEEEE is a message that is NOT getting thro

and in the afffected areas the Kent variant is about co equal with Indian and hey boys and girls, no one has suggested shooting burning and branding those with Kent covid - kinda funny really innit

As long as we don't extend the restrictions to protect those who refuse the vaccine. Its their choice to take the risk, if they suffer, it's their own fault.
totally agree ^^
no we have to protect everyone - the sinners and the saved!

You HAVE noticed that when covid infects ( and KIIIIIILLLLLLLLSSSS!) it doesnt pass over the conscientious objectors innit? - and doesnt sort of say - oh I wont infect HIM
oh it is better if someone dies who has refused?
well no
I SAY - any death is avoidable and regretted -

hey whilst we are at it - Times today - first estimate of what vaccination has done = no of lives saved or not dead

very very slow to do the same about slowness of vaccination ( means people die in the meantime which is completely avoidable) that is estimate the number of deaths whilst the politicians argued
I am AMAZED that the OP has to ask this because it has been said so many times. The more infections, the more chance of variation.

Emmie, those large scale events are called "pilots" but actually they are real world experiments....everyone involved understands this although I am betting they went for the fun. Airflow, Co2, droplets, temperature and heat plume and post event infection levels are all being monitored. only people from within a certain geographical area could go and they all had to test negative before being allowed to enter. Again massively covered in the meejer, amazed some people still think it was just a series of jollys.
